edited March 2023 in Universal Credit (UC)
Hi I have discovered today that I have been missing out on the difference between lower and higher disabled child element of UC
I am currently only getting the lower rate but in July 2022 my child was awarded the higher rate care component of DLA which means I should have been getting the higher rate on UC but didn’t know about this
I have updated UC today with a change of circumstance but does anyone know whether they will back pay the difference from july 2022 till now
thanks for any and all responses

Usually changes take place in the assessment period you reported the changes. It will be down to a decision maker to decide when to start the higher element from.

They should apply the higher disabled child element from the assessment period in which the higher rate care component of DLA began. If they don't you request a Mandatory Reconsideration.

    Hello @JessMas71406894

I'm glad you've updated your journal with the change of circumstances so you don't miss out any further. Please let us know how you get on. And fire away with any other questions.

Just to add, I've moved your thread to our Universal Credit (UC) category to help others find it.

Best wishes to you and your family.

Hiya, I’m now in the same boat myself. What was the outcome for you? I’ve missed out on £8000! Praying they back date it all

Well they ended up backdating all of ours you just need to pop a message in your journal to say you want the backdated money and why you hadn’t claimed sooner. I didn’t even know there was a higher or lower element and thought it was a set amount. Roughly 1 week later 2500 was in the bank
so you’ll be in for a nice little pay day 🎉

Also same boat, didn’t even know there was 2 different amount regarding it so I’ve missed out on almost 10k… it’s been with a decision maker for 2 1/2 weeks no reply as yet.
Fingers cross… did anyone else on here get it fully backdated x

Let me know how you get on, I’ve had no response as yet in my journal and pay hasn’t been increased (was paid last week) so fingers crossed no news is good news!

Yes I had mine backdated after a month or so of waiting, they initially wrote me a letter saying they wouldn’t penalise me for not letting them know about the change, then after giving very good reason they agreed to backdate and paid £7500

Hi, I’m in a similar situation I’m just wondering if during the time of claim did anyone make a change for example adding a partner to the claim? I’m worried now they won’t back date as I went from single to joint claim in between the backdate date, and award date
