Have you ever won something in a contest?

On a Wednesday evening, I like to join some friends for the pub quiz.
Always placing in the middle, one of my friends said "I never win anything".
I thought it could be a great discussion topic here, so over to you:
Always placing in the middle, one of my friends said "I never win anything".
I thought it could be a great discussion topic here, so over to you:
- Have you ever won something in a contest?
- What was it you won?
- Do you think you are a lucky person?
- Is there something you'd like to win?

i was suposed to be having complex surgery and i used to atend an amazing suported art studio for adults with learning disability (though not suprising many of us had autism as well),until the surgery came up.my most prized win was i entered an in house art competition back when i used to be able to hold my DSLR cameras (ive sold them all now sadly), a lot of my DSLR work was around pigeons because i feel theyre so misunderstood, wrongly judged, beautiful and trancing to watch them in the park.i feel they have lots of shades of 'colours' inside them highlighting just how wonderful they can be so i set out to show people how a pigeon really looks to me.i took a black and white photo of a local buff mancunian pigeon (i believe it chatters with a strong manc acent lol) and i was still trying to get to grips with photoshop in the studio at the time,my memory damage kept making me forget how to do things. i edited everything into complex colours.anyway,i ended up with this 24mb+ edited photto sent it to my tutor and a while later it was sent round our studios email newsletter that id won and ive never won anything before.it gave me the inspration to build a portfolio (paper version).i found out i won and they came round my house and dropped off a huge mounted print of it in a lovely frame with solid glass front. it was during COVID so they acted like i was cujo from the awesome stephen king film (also called cujo),and it felt like they stood half way down the street. exageration,...maybe slightly less.yes-a lot of people say they dont win anything, but if they think hard enough they probably have won something, maybe they just dont see smaller things as having the same value as say, winning a holiday- i dont know,i used to think it myself, but ive won lego at NAIDEX last year i think (never got it but its the thought that counts lol).3

Nothing major like tombola and prize bingo back in the day etc.
My 1st win aged 9 was a big bottle of sherry, my mom took it off me and I protested saying it was mine lol. Wouldn't be able to hand it over to a 9 year old today.3 -
@Sandy_123 that is quite funny lol
I don't mean for this to sound self righteous or anything but my biggest win has been not gambling in the first place ... when I was a child my parents used to give us money to use in the slot machines and I used to just pocket mine ... at the end of the day my brother would complain he had spent all his money and not won anything and I would walk away with some nice shiny coins2 -
My most prized win was a copy of Ghostbusters 2 on VHS and a frisbee from BIG magazine.
I think I'm really showing my age there.
I do tend to be quite lucky with things like that, my biggest was £500 of amazon vouchers.1 -
That's amazing @CATP I would love to see some of your photos of the pigeons. I love birds. You'll have to pop them in the KaleidoScope: Our own gallery for members' art work, crafts and photographs thread if you want
@Sandy_123 That was one way you'd get a 9 year old to sleep 😂
@66Mustang Ooo a win over your sibling is a great feeling! haha
@Albus_Scope I miss VHS! £500 in Amazon vouchers is a good one!
I don't think I'm a lucky person but I have faired better at "odd's games" than ones where I have more control. I think the best thing I've won is in a raffle when I was about 10 or 11. It was a massive tower of Ferrero Roche's. I don't like them, but my Grandma loved them, I was able to give her something just because 🥰
Now... I think I speak for a lot of people where under the question of "what I'd like to win", the lottery? Doesn't have to be a huge jackpot. Just a little financial security would be great.0 -
I just won £50 and a box of Warhammer models during my lunch break. This thread is obviously very lucky!
I'm one of those people who would be more than happy with enough of a win to make life more comfortable and maybe treat the family to something nice too.

I won a couple of tickets to a show in London a few years ago. Obviously I couldn't get there due to health reasons!
They did allow me to gift them to someone else fortunately. So now I always check whether I could use or gift a prize before entering any competition!
The tombola post reminded me I did once win a tin of Lyles Black Treacle in a Christmas raffle when visiting a relative at the old people's home... I must have only been about 6 or 7. Didn't even know what treacle was!1 -
@OverlyAnxious I misread your post at first and for some reason I thought you'd won a lifetime supply of treacle. Nobody needs that much treacle!
I won a garden centre competition when I was about nine where you had to create a mini garden in a tray. I made a Dr. Doolittle themed garden because I was obsessed with the book at the time, with all sorts of little plastic animals and tiny bits of plants. I won a £30 voucher and bought a very tacky teddy bear statue for the garden. My mum hated so much she hid it under a bush2 -
@OverlyAnxious Did you end up liking it?
@Rosie_Scope I read it as I won a ton! Had the image of the massive weight in cartoons 😂 Awww poor Tatty Teddy having to live in a bush. The mini garden sounds so cool!

@woodbine What kind of Lego set was it?
@WelshBlue Wow! After seeing your artwork in Kaleidoscope, I can see why you won!
@OverlyAnxious Haha! May be one to pick up over Christmas as it usually comes more into fashion then.1 -
@Hannah_Scope
In Middle School I came third in a 50 meters race, Sports Day, it was brutal, I was beaten by two girls, who finished 1st and 2nd, from that point I knew I was in trouble.1 -
I always thought Sports Day was brutal @rebel11 Well done coming third!0

I love that @Grinchy! How often did you find yourself having to tell your son to take it off? 😂0
-
this was back when he was around 6, he loved dressing up, it was pretty involved, but when he was in it he loved running round and interacting with the other kids, he just turned 22, so it was a while ago now, doesn't feel like how long ago it was x0
-
@grinchy I always feel that way when it comes to kids. It doesn't feel as long ago as it was1
