Hi, my name is 44flower! I am allergic to general anesthetic, but have to have cataract surgery soon

I have cerebral palsy and alergic to General anesthetic. I am about to have catarract operations on both eyes. I am deaf and 79 years old. Is there anyone out there who could advise me. I have refused the General anesthetic.

    Hi there @44flower and welcome to the community, how are you today?

But I do need to say we are not medical professionals, so cannot advise on surgical matters, but one of the regulars may be able to advise on who you could speak to.   Have you spoken to you GP and the surgeon about this for some support?

    Hi @44flower - & welcome to the community from me also. I'm sorry to read about your problems with general anaesthesia. However, my understanding is that cataract surgery is usually done using local anaesthesia, so, as above, I'd contact your GP, eye clinic or surgeon to find out more about your cataract surgery.
    If by any chance you have problems with a local anaesthetic, there may be ways around this too. For years I thought that local anaesthesia didn't work on me, as I still felt everything. My last dentist found one that she felt would be effective, so I made a note of it, & have had this used for a subsequent dental treatment, & for a minor oral surgery. Hoping there's a way for you to have a successful surgery.

    I am seeing the eye doctor on Monday so he nay be able to shed some light on my concerns.  I just wondered what the experiences were of athetoid cerebral palsy were undergoing catarract surgery.

    I'm no expert on any of this but have had cataract surgery and they were done under a local anaesthetic. 
    Think that is generally the way they go these days.
    It is painless. No eye shield (least not at the clinic mine were done), aftercare at home consists of eye drops.

    I have  the fidgety athetoid type of cerebral palsy that is why general anesthetic was offered. But hopefully they may give me a muscle relaxant as well as the local anesthetic.  Valium, my brother tells me

    One thing you do have to do under the local is lay still. Something they kept shouting at me about. But a muscle relaxant would do it.
