What’s the last thing you bought online?

@66Mustang thank you for that, much appreciated! This could be the push i need to buy one. The reason for wanting to change from my desktop is it just takes up so much space. With a laptop, i could also sit on the sofa with my feet up and that does sound very appealing.I will let you and noman know if i do end up buying one.1

The ability to use it anywhere is very useful I agree. Unless you do gaming (I don't believe you do) it should last all day for you on a charge as well.
Please do let us know Poppy1 -

Please do let us know PoppyNo, i don't use it for gaming. I prefer the PS4 or 5 (if i ever get a look in with my daughter)A couple of questions i just thought of, do you have the 256GB or the 512GB? and what's the difference please?0 -
256GB or 512GB is simply the amount of storage space. So when you save things like documents, photos, videos and such. Which you need will depend on what/how much stuff you store on your computer - personally I use very little storage, I haven't even used up 100GB yet.
The RAM is what I'd probably upgrade, if anything. The laptop comes with 8GB as standard which will "do" but 16GB is a decent upgrade and will future proof the machine if you intend to keep it for several years.
Edit: just to add the RAM (Random Access Memory) is what lets the computer run programs, every program uses a certain amount, and over time better more complicated updates to apps come out which tend to use more RAM. Also if you run several things at once each one will use a bit each so you if this is something you do you will notice the benefit of having more.
Second Edit: I just realised Apple tend to call it something like "Unified Memory" instead of RAM but it's basically the same thing.

Here's my memory usage. This is with just Safari (running Scope and 2 other tabs), Mail and Pages (Apple's version of Word) open.
(I have 16GB on my laptop.)
As you can see I am indeed not quite using 8GB but would be dangerously close to using it up if my laptop only had 8GB.

Nothing, it's a figure of speech.
I just think Apple providing 8GB on a laptop that costs well over a grand is a bit of an insult. Paying £200 to future proof it by several years is not much in the grand scheme of things.
I know from your previous posts aimed at me that you just don't like me so I'm not going to get into an argument, I am just trying to help Poppy make the best decision..1 -
Ok folks, let's nip this in the bud now please. Tone can be lost with the written word.1

@66Mustang and @noman thank you both very much for the very detailed explanation, it's very much appreciated!

@66Mustang @noman just to update, decided to treat myself this morning and bought MacBook Air 2023 15.3 inch with 16gb unified memory. Delivery is tomorrow. Very excited! Thanks again for the advice!2

Congrats poppy!!!!! That is speedy delivery for a customised laptop as well, usually they take over a week if you edit the spec. I bet you can't wait!!!!

Ahhh, nice one Poppy! I'm not a big fan of Apple products, but they're meant to be lovely laptops.1
-
Thanks @66Mustang, I was very surprised too. @Albus_Scope I totally get that, not everyone likes apple. I have the iPhone and watch and love them.1

Poppy, just a very small thing that may make you like the Mac and its unity with your other Apple products even more. You can set it so that when you are wearing your watch, the Mac automatically unlocks with no need for a password or fingerprint. Of course if you aren't comfortable with that you can turn the feature off, too.

All this talk of Apple and Macbooks ... I'm a Windows person but have leaned that Mac are indestructible.
My daughter drove over her bag with an iPad and Mac book in ... Mac book got a scuffed back, iPad got a slight curve but both working perfectly. Bag ruined with a six inch chunk missing out of it and makeup and satsumas squished
I dropped a Windows laptop from 3foot and got a cracked screen1 -
@WelshBlue I can well imagine. There was a story about 15 years ago of someone being shot at while working on their MacBook and it saved them from the bullet...0

I wouldn't have any problems setting it up like that as i only live with my daughter who i trust of course. I may have to hid it from my grandson though
even though he's already got an ipad.
Am i also correct in thinking that i can only send a text from the macbook as well instead of from my phone?0 -
Yes Poppy you can send texts from the Mac, I do it all the time! I believe you can make phone calls from it as well though have never tried this as I very rarely use the phone.
