Income-related ESA

Hi,

My grandmother past away last year in July. My father inherited half of the house along with his brother. It has gone through probate and is being sold and contracts are about to be signed.

My question is when should my father inform the DWP as he is on Income-related ESA and from his understanding when he receives the money from the sale is when he is suppose to inform them.

But I thought it was when he inherited half of the property, if he was supposed to do it in the past will he have to backdate his benefit payments?

He will be receiving around £100,000

Yes he should have reported the changes when he inherited the property. The only time a property can be disregarded from capital is if you live in the property. There's no disregard for inheritance.

If any part of his ESA is contributions based then this isn't affected. If he's claiming any other benefits such as housing benefit and/or council tax reduction the changes should have also been reported to his local Authority. If there's any overpayment, it will need to be repaid back for all means tested benefits.

Thank you for informing me I've let him know.

Will him receiving £100,000 inheritance affect my UC benefit if I live at home with them. I will not see any of the money.

No it won't if none of the inheritance belongs to you. His circumstances are nothing to do with your entitlement to UC.
