Dislocated thumb and operations - do you have experience?

I'm a multiply disabled wheelchair user and falls have also damaged my hands and dexterity. I don't have a carer and need to learn some new ways around the problems - but I don't know yet which of my own tricks would help others.
I do have one urgent problem. One of my thumbs has been found to be partially dislocated; it can't be corrected because the socket is damaged and the cartilage is gone.
I am supposed to decide if I want an operation to immobilise it, when I see the Specialist next Monday, but I can't find out the prognosis either way. Has anyone else got any experience of this?
