PIP After State Pension Age

Hello, I'm hoping for an expert's view or someone who has been through the same issue.

I have a PIP award until Oct 2024. In July 2024 I am 66 and will receive the State Pension. I've been trying to resolve this for a couple of weeks now, and the phone waiting time is taking its toll on my patience.

I have read on various sites that if someone is claiming PIP when the State Pension kicks in the award will be turned into an indefinite award. I researched the issue because I have received a text saying a review form is being sent out.  I phoned PIP and I'm still not sure.  I was told by someone who answered the phone the CAB was wrong. I asked to speak to a Manager who didn't sound too confident in her answer. Who said it depends really? I should check with CAB again. I did and the CAB said their information is correct. I've found a couple of other sources who's websites agree with the CAB. I don't need opinions from these various organisations I want facts. Anyone able to help, please!

Hi I am not an expert but from what I understand you will still be receiving pip after you reach state retirement age but as your current award is due to end shortly after that, I would assume the form they are sending you will probably be the light touch review and people may then get a ten year award.

Hello, Thanks I thought something like that. I could have been completely better so they need confirmation that I'm not. It's frustrating when we need info and after waiting 2 hours I still didn't know the answer. The DWP services are really busy and I don't blame the people who are on the front line.

Your review will still need to continue as normal.

The form you will receive is the usual AR1 review form, not the light touch review one. The only ones that will receive this form are those that currently have a 10 year award.

Those that are state pension age and above may have a 10 year award if their conditions are not expected to change. Not everyone of this age will have a 10 year award.

Review forms are usually sent out about 8 months before your award is due to end, so likely to me sometime next month.

It came today. Thanks. Do you know if I will still be paid up to the previous award ie October if the process of the review is completed before then? I'm pretty confident I will be awarded again but I don't like the process and I've heard some horror stories about some very ill people being refused.

There are very long delays for review decisions so you could be waiting a considerable length of time. We have members that have waited a year for a decision.

You should expect another assessment because most people have them.

Your current award will continue until a decision is made on the review. If the worst happens and you’re refused your payments will stop even if it’s before the end date of your current award.

Please make sure that you treat the form as a new claim and give as much relevant information as possible. Even if there’s been no change. Do not just put no change and nothing else.

I found this in the government's PIP handbook (feb 2024) It seems it will be a light-touch review.

Ongoing awards with a ‘light touch’ review

This is for claimants who have:

    • very stable needs which are unlikely to change over time
    • high level needs which will either stay the same or get worse
    • a planned award review date due on or at State Pension age
    • special rules for end of life claim due when of State Pension age

These claimants would not usually be expected to have a face-to-face assessment at review.

Yes but that doesn’t apply to everyone of state pension age and above.

It won't be a light touch review just because you have reached pension age.
I don't know what to believe any more there are so many conflicting opinions. You're claiming a different thing even though as I provided the government's latest handbook states the opposite it clearly says-

    • high level needs which will either stay the same or get worse

This handbook is less than a month old.

I did read somewhere that assessments have changed for pension-age people but I can't remember where I saw it. Only time will tell!

I don't know it's a difficult one to solve. I phoned PIP and they gave me two different answers. Neither was stated as the official handbook and I would have thought that was the definitive answer. CAB gave me a different answer as well. I'm just going to see what happens!

All you can do is wait for the decision to be made but that may take quite sometime due to huge backlogs.

Hello. I filled the form in and sent it back. Im pretty sure its a light touch review for pension age people as per the info provided by the government. I suppose that means theres no medical.

No, you have that wrong I'm afraid. Light touch reviews only apply to those with a 10 year ongoing award. Light touch reviews also receive a different form, it's much shorter than the usual review form. The usual review form is the AR1 and the light touch is AR2. You can see the AR2 here. https://www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/images/resources/PIP-AR2-Light-Touch-Review-Form.pdf

If that wasn't the form you received then it will be a normal review but this doesn't mean it can't be a paper based assessment, though they are rare.

Im just going on what the government say. They say it will be a light touch so only time will tell. I quoted from their guidance earlier.

As I advised, if it was the form I linked above it will be light touch, if it wasn't then it's a normal review.
