I'm confused. The benefit rules (pip for me) say that even an overnight stay should be reported but Debbie Alumni says the day going in and the day coming out don't count but isn't that an overnight stay?0

As i advised you on another thread, the day you go in and come home do not count. You only need to report changes if you've been in for more than 28 days. https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/sick-or-disabled-people-and-carers/pip/pip-changes-and-reviews/changes-that-affect-pip/If you're going in for just one night then that's not counted because the day you go in and come home do not count. You do not need to report anything for just a one night stay.
