How will my son's job affect our financial life?

Hi everyone

I’ve joined for advice please and glad I found you. Our disabled son with ehcp leaves college this year and has got a job. We are on pip and uc (just migrated). I’m wondering how this will affect financial life and trying to prepare myself. I am registered disabled too and my husband is our carer. Basically I’m wondering when to let uc know? Straight away or when he actually gets paid? And will his income be taken into consideration with our couples claim? Proud of our son and also being real that a job may be to much for him, fingers crossed as it’s what he wants to do. I’m assuming it will affect housing benefit too? Any advice is welcome and Thankyou in advance x

That's great news for your son and I hope he likes his new job. If your UC includes the child and disabled child elements for your son then you will lose both of those. Once he leaves college you will need to report the changes for UC.

If he is under 21 then there will be no non dependent deductions for UC. Also if the PIP award is either yours or your partners and it includes the daily living part there will be no non dependent deductions regardless of the age of the non dependent.

For the avoidance of doubt, you will only be claiming housing benefit if living in either supported or temporary housing. As you've claiming UC your rent will be paid through this known as housing element.
