Entering a Lift - Wheelchair users

Can I ask wheelchair users - How to you enter a lift?  I tried to help a wheelchair user the other day, he refused my help. He was exiting a lift by reversing out, and unaware of an obstacle in his path.  Afterwards I wondered why a Wheelchair user would not reverse into a lift, and wheel forward when exiting. (The lift was too small to turn IMHO) - please accept my apologies if I have used any wrong terminology.  I would value any opinions, as I would not want to offend anyone by making this suggestion.

    There could have already been someone in the lift when they got in. Sometimes if you are not facing forward when the lift arrives you can't see it open and by the time you try and turn round to reverse the doors are close.

    Exactly this just being slightly away from a lift in central Oxford I had it shut on my foot twice because it was expecting movement very soon after arrival. So I always go in front ways and put by reverse if I cannot turn in the lift.

    I do see regularly wheelchair and mobility scooter users normally have to reverse out with help. May I just ask, is this lift the large Waterstones as I think it’s known as a problem. If it’s one specific location please post here.

    I dont know what’s happened with the Oxford City Council Access Officer. I believe there is an access group. Joining an access group may help. Although, the city council may be your best place to contact.
