Backdated Council tax discount

We have been awarded Council tax discount as my son has a severe impairment. The Council have only backdated 1 week! Can they do this? It seems grossly unfair. He is nearly 19 and has multiple lifelong conditions

When did you apply?
I would have thought they would at least backdate it till the date you applied?
I don't think they'd go any further though. I have lifelong conditions as well and we only realised I could get PIP when I was 18 - we were never told that child DLA even existed but I couldn't get backdated the 30 grand I would have got if I claimed since I was 3 😪 😆

It's definitely possible to have this backdated but a lot of the time LAs will refuse. I found this link on rightsnet that may help.
it's within your rights to challenge that decision but you should get some expert advice.0 -
Thanks all. I've found some case law which may be useful- Singleton v South Ribble Council

PIP, DLA is completely different to SMI for CT. SMI is a discount, it's not a benefit. It's definitely possible to backdate a discount.
