12 July: How do Pelicans Eat? : Cool things I learnt today

I went to the zoo last year and saw a pelican.

It then gave me the burning question of how exactly do they eat?

We know they fly down and then scoop the fish up with their huge beaks. ( a bit like my dad when we leave a bowl of crisps out)

Here is the question though, Where does all that water go?

Is the pouch perforated ( full of holes live a sieve) ? Do they actually swallow all of that water?

Either way I needed to know; it felt like the fate of this word depended on it ( obviously now I can see I was being slightly dramatic)

Luckily there was a zookeeper there trying to chase the pelican back into its enclosure. Of course I asked her ( as if she wasn't busy enough)

She explained that the pelicans use their tongues to push the water out of their beak. Pelicans can expel over 10L of water🀯

It turns out this is also their version of sweating to cool their body.

Considering they weigh on average 2-15 kgs and they can scoop almost their entire weight in water. How on earth do they make it airborne?

I was expecting some miraculous use of physics!

It turns out they don't fly with a full pouch, they spit the water beforehand. ( it, seems obvious now)

Anyway, that's everything you need to know about how a pelican eats

Another great post @marmitelover2000! It's not something I've ever thought about before but I'm glad I know all about how a pelican eats now πŸ˜€ Which zoo did you go to? The closest one to me is Yorkshire Wildlife Park but it's just so big that I can't really walk round it all now.

I’m not too sure, I think it was IOW.

Good news for you is that Yorkshire wildlife park allows guests to hire a mobility scooter for the day from them !

You can zoom around and enjoy the animals without having to walk.

Ah thanks for that 😊 I always worry about things like that because I don't 'look' like I have mobility issues. I always think they'll think I'm lying. Need to get better at advocating for myself.

    You got this! @Rachel_Scope

Plus, you're there to see the animals, not the judgemental humans. The animals don't care about your perceived level of mobility :)

You can see humans anywhere so the focus isn't on them, don't give them your attention if they don't deserve it. You also probably won't see them ever again so it doesn't matter.

Also, Most people will be focusing on the animals as well!

It's much more interesting than a person on a mobility scooter.

If they do look at you, their next thought will probably be "what is for lunch" and you will already be out of their head.

    We're all rooting for you!

You can also tell us what it's like there. If it's good I'll take my Grandma Next year :)

Aww thank you ❀️ You're completely right. I tend to think everyone is focused on me but they're really not, I'm not that interesting πŸ˜‚

The last time I went was a couple of years ago and it's great! I'd definitely recommend it, it's just very big and always expanding so it's a long day. It's amazing to see polar bears in Doncaster!

    Thanks @marmitelover2000

You are full of facts, I can't wait till tomorrow to see what you'll post πŸ‘

I just thought though … is it true that animals aren't judgemental?? In the animal world, if you want something that someone else has got you just take it off them, and like, everyone has to know their place because of their gender or whatever … it sounds very judgemental to me!!!

I digress though πŸ˜† thanks for sharing this πŸ˜ƒ

@marmitelover2000 I didn't know that. Please keep going with amazing facts!

@Rachel_Scope how it seems to me is once you're on the scooter everyone will assume you have mobility issues
