Andi, it wasn't even Sunak's fault! He took over a failed government which had spent 14 years demolishing the public services Labour had built when in power pre-2010.

I’m really trying not to comment much about the dwp & disability under labour till the gov summer recess has started…..
…….but someone’s got to have a word with Kendall as her quotes that media are choosing as headline read appallingly (her chosen tone & language towards claimants as a whole group is so anxiety inducing - I really hope she’s clueless and not the alternative I and many others fear)(For the record Kendall - a persons welfare, well-being and health are more often than not, the most important thing to an average human being - if ppl are to have any chance of working than being concerned about individual welfare must be a paramount part of that…….certainly not brushed to the side - this headline leaves a really bad taste in my mouth)

That's all very well her saying that, how many business want to employ people with disabilities, Having to have time off work because of illness, and doctors appointments.
I, it will make us , even more ill. I used to work part time as a cleaner, and even if you felt bad had to drag yourself in. You were penalised by having time off through being ill and had to have meetings. At the time I wasn't ill like I am now, it's due to the job I have copd, and my joint hypermobility syndrome worse due to covid.
What about volunteering? To keep benefit, but volunteering, even 1 hour etc. People who have nothing wrong with them, for work . But for us. It's impossible. This needs spelt out to her. Organisations like scope , they need to listen too

Liz Kendall “Over the last 14 years millions of people have been denied their rightful chance of participating in the labour market, and the hope of a brighter future. They’ve been excluded, left out, categorised and labelled. Britain isn’t working.
“We need fundamental reform so the department for welfare becomes a genuine department for work.”
Local leaders will be able to tailor schemes to get people back into work under the plans.
“We will give local places the responsibility and resources to design a joined-up work, health and skills offer that’s right for local people.
“DWP will support local areas to make a success of this new approach.
“And we will devolve new powers over employment support to catalyse action and change.”
Ms Kendall will announce the Labour Market Advisory Board, a group of external experts to give market insight and advice to the DWP and challenge its plans.
The Work and Pensions Secretary previously announced that the Government will publish a White Paper that builds on Labour’s approach to get people working by creating a new national careers service, creating new work, health and skills plans for the economically inactive and with a youth guarantee for 18 to 21-year-olds.
On Monday, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said he would be setting up a new body, Skills England, to “fire up” the training of more British workers and reduce reliance on foreign labour.

All very welcome if you subscribe 100% to the social model for your disability.
It doesn't work for me because although there are certainly ways the world could be different that would make my life lesa stressful, it's the voices in my head that stop me from being employed, not the lack of adjustments.
I need to see that they understand that however much we might wish it to be different, some of us just can't be employed, either because we are too ill or because managing our disability is already a full time job or because being employed would make our health worse.
It was very worrying to read that they have put in charge the man who was Blair's advisor on conditionality and who was in charge of introducing the WCA, ESA & making IB claimants do work related activity. Very worrying indeed.

How can they get someone who is unable to work to work?
All of this is wave magic wand and everything will be fine, the realities are there are people, working age people who cannot work due to impairment/disability. The other realities are there is a Mental Illness crisis in Britain which has seemed to have increased from 2022 onwards, this isn't "down and bluesy" to quote Mel Stride, these are people who would rather not live anymore which is a terrible inditement on this country to be honest.
I hope Labour will be using the carrot more than the stick with their plans but the influence of Blair is there, what was the incapacity benefits regime like back then under New Labour? What it hard or compassionate?

I’ve been thinking that some members find reading in depth opinions and media articles useful but some members may find it a bit overwhelming or only see the sensationalist headlinesIt would be really useful to have the spoiler banner option (but more of a trigger warning purpose so members have the option to skip pasts elements of a post)
I hope that makes sense and if it’s not already a feature it can made into one

I've just finished watching her speech. Honestly, I'm currently not too worried. She just said the usual "Those who can work, should work" I don't think it'll all be sunshine and roses, but I think we should try not to panic about something that may never happen.

What about the UC migration? With my rent rises and loss of inflation, my TP will be gone in 2 years. Then I'll be £50 per week worse off and I can't afford to lose a penny of it. Absolutely no word on that so I can only assume that's going ahead. How on earth are we supposed to budget for that kind of loss? There's a reason disabled people on UC are the majority food bank users, I hope the Trussell Trust are aware they're about to get several million more customers?

I am hoping they go all out to help people who want to work and who can work, work safer, better or more productively. And then I hope they go all out to protect the rights of those who can't work so they don't need to keep feeling scared.
Two very important things that need to be handled with clarity not confused with one another.
Strengthen the pathway for those who can't work. Strengthen the pathway for those who can.
After 14 years of Tories blaming us for everything, it's going to take a long time for disabled people not to believe they're constantly under threat. I don't know if we are or not yet, but hopefully if we can make politicians understand why we feel like this, we can get them to talk with more clarity.2 -

After what's happened today over the winter fuel allowance it wouldn't surprise me now if PIP is means tested in the future.
