UC and bank statement

hi everyone, was wondering if anyone has any advice around UC and savings. I’m an appointee for my sister who has various disabilities and health conditions. During lockdown she started reviving UC and I would take all her telephone appointments because she was really unwell with ongoing epileptic episodes and we were told that it could be both epilepsy and non-epileptic seizures due to trauma and stress. We have taken her many time abroad since then for testing to see what’s causing her to have some many seizures as here the nhs is slow and private care is too expensive. Family have paid for most of her tests but she also has been receiving UC and well as PIP but had put into her savings for any further testing and treatment, she has under 16k saving. Now UC has asked for banks statements and verification of ID. Has anyone experienced this before I’m worried that not going to understand her circumstances and why she has so much savings. I would really appreciate some advice? Thank you

Sounds like it's a review of her claim to make sure it's correct. They are currently reviewing thousands of people.

If her savings/capital are more than £6,000 did you report the changes? For every £250 or part thereof over this amount there's a £4.35/month deduction in her UC. If she was entitled to any of the cost of living payments then those are disregarded indefinitely.

Hi would still class saving from pip payments as over threshold or not.as I was back dated pip and claiming uc at same time just looking for bit advice.thanks

Backdated money owed to you from PIP is disregarded for 1 year from the date you received it. After that time it will be counted as capital/savings and be included in any capital you may already have.

Any PIP payments not spent at the end of the period they are paid for is treated as capital for UC purposes. Capital of between £6,000 and £16,000 will see a reduction in your UC.

    Hi

I’m after some advice please? I’ve worked for the last 27 years unfortunately due to I’ll health I’m on UC, Lcwa, and pip. My daughter has asked if she can move back home and she is thinking of becoming self employed. Would this affect me? Sorry I’m not sure whom or where to ask for guidance. Thank you 😊

Hey @jules78, welcome to the community! 😊 Let's start off by getting the easier one out the way, PIP will not be affected at all as it's not means-tested.

For UC, do you receive any housing element? As if there is another non-dependent adult in the house it's expected they should pay towards the housing and thus you can lose some housing element. If your daughter is over 21 there may be some reduction to your Universal Credit, you can see more information here: Non-dependant rules - Entitledto

That's not quite correct if @jules78 PIP includes the daily living part as there will be no non dependent deductions, regardless of their age. It advises this in the link you posted.

I am so grateful to you both for your time and guidance. So myself yes I currently receive a proportion of the housing element, then there’s another non dependent who’s very poorly and has UC and the higher pip award. He contributes £200 per month which £100 is allocated to housing costs: My daughter is (hoping) to move in on the basis to help and potentially start her own business, however I’m just mindful of the impact that will have on my son who’s needs are more important right now. Aswel as potential financial implications. Thank you both 🙏🏼

There will be no financial implications for your UC if your PIP includes the daily living part. Does it include this?

If so are there any non dependent deductions being taken from your UC? Please check your statement. If there is then there shouldn't be.

If your daughter moves in with you then you'll be entitled to more housing element for an extra bedroom, unless your housing element currently covers your whole rent but you said it includes a "proportion" so I infer that it doesn't cover the whole amount.

Yes the daily living - standard rate has been applied, I can see now that as this is all relatively new, UC have just asked the question about will I be using the 3rd bedroom for my disability, so I guess this means I will no longer have to pay the charge I was before. And I’ll have the help that I so desperately need. Thank you so much for your assistance! It all just really stressed me out not knowing implications of choices.

    Thanks again 😊
