Confused about back payment affecting UC.

Hi,

My partner is on income based esa and has received his migration letter to UC today.

I have recently been awarded pip and will be receiving quite a large amount of back pay ( unsure exact amount and when). I'm aware we need to claim as a couple and am worried that we will be above the £16,000 amount allowed once I've got this payment and that he will lose his benefit.

Could anyone explain how this all works please?

Thank you. I'm assuming if after a year that we had more than £6000 remaining, that his payments would be lowered?

Yes, for every £250 or part thereof over £6,000 then UC will be reduced by £4.35/month.

Thank you. I'm also expecting compensation from a work related incident. Again, I'm not sure of the amount or when, but liability has been accepted, so I will definitely be receiving something. Are personal injury claims included straight away? I'm aware it sounds as though I'm going to be in receipt of so much money, but as we all know, with bills and everything, it wouldn't last long if that was all we had to rely on.

Personal injury compensation is disregarded for one year.

Hey @Juthbert, first of all congrats on the award and backpay from PIP 🙂 Most bulk payments of this are disregarded for a year. It is best to ask and double check that first of course!
