Dwp uc bank statements/closed banks
hello,
Hope you all doing well :)
I recently read about uc asking people to send 4 months bank statements and other information . It’s not a big issue, but what about the closed bank accounts? If let’s say i closed my bank account 5 months ago and they ask me to send 4 months worth of bank statements will they ask to provide them bank statements too, explain the reason of closing the bank account? I know it doesn’t count in the 4 months statements, but they will see that you had that bank account as the bank account stays on your credit history for 7-10 years approximately. And I believe they check what banks you have/had by credit history. Did anyone had experience of it? How did it go?
Thank you and have a good day 😇

No, as generally they are only interested in the last 4 months.
Even with closed accounts the bank should have provided a final statement, and they will still provide statements long after the account closure, upon request.

Hi :)
So they will need the closed bank account statements too I suppose. As they do checks by “credit checks” so they still can see the bank that is closed even years ago as it stays on the credit history for years. I wonder if anyone actually had that experience, but by what I read they will see that bank and ask statements even if it’s been closed more than 4 months ago. :)

The bank account closed more than 4 months ago so they won’t need them. They will not do a credit search on you.

That's not true.
The standard request from UC during a Compliance Check is bank statements from the previous 4 months, not your entire banking history.
Anything older than 4 months they probably will not be interested in.

I thought they see what banks you have by the credit history? And the banks stay on your credit history for years, so they must see it. Maybe they do check it different way, but thats what I thought/read. Otherwise, how do they see what banks do you have? They might see the bank still as it stays on it for so long and ask a proof when did you closed that bank which will be statement anyway? I wonder how they do these things and what’s actually been asked as eventually everyone will be checked :)

There is a different opinions here as well as everywhere else I read. Would be interesting to see someone with the experience. But I am the same opinion as Poppy that the bank statements of the closed bank account will need to be showed aswell. They dont know when did you close the bank and if they do use something similar like credit check thing they will see what banks you have/had.

The DWP were given full access to credit reference records for all claimants in 2013/2014. Prior to this they only had access on an ad hoc basis when suspecting fraud.
They can, and do ask, if it flags you have more bank accounts than what you are reporting.
However, if they have only asked you for 4 months of statements and the other accounts are closed and have been for more than the 4 months, they will not need to see these.

sorry Poppy I missread it. I thought you said that they will need them too? Sorry :)

If they do it by something similar like credit checks they will see the bank on the system still and can require information of it. And even if its been closed over 4 months ago, but the person was claiming at the time I think there is a big chance they can ask to provide them statements too. :) its my opinion.

I've been through a UC Compliance Check myself last year.
I was asked for statements from my bank accounts for the last 4 months.
During the phone call I was asked about other potential sources of money and if I had other accounts.
I have closed accounts, I was not asked about these as they were closed more than 4 months ago.

Yes, they can ask to see them, and may in the future, but they have not asked for them right now. They have asked for the last 4 months, so that is all you need to provide.

I do have closed bank account and I want to close more of the bank accounts because I do not use them, but will wait for now.I suppose I will wait and see if they will ask about the closed bank account as we all get checked eventually and I will share my experience. As I havent see no one’s experience with the closed bank accounts so far :)

Did you close the accounts while being on uc if you mind me asking? Sorry, somehow I do not see the whole message and just read the end of your message now. Maybe because I am reading/replying on my phone.

I can't really remember, although probably not.

You keep mentioning your credit history but DWP do not check that.

Poppy, I thought they see what banks do you have by credit checks/history and the cards stay there for years. Otherwise, how do they know what bank accounts the person has? As they see all of them.

Only just realised your comment here about credit reference, I didn't actually know that, thanks. You learn something new everyday.

I believe they know through HMRC as the banks send data to hmrc

Why are people concerned about closed accounts. It's closed so there is no money in it.
Everyone has reasons for doing things. I closed mine today because I will be moving to UC and I will be dealing with just one current account. I got fed up with the council querying what the bank credits were, despite everything being given to them. So now it will say what the income benefit is and they can see at a glance what income I have.
Hopefully it will be easier for me as well, we will see. I do still use cash.
