Hi Everyone

I am so glad to be joining this neurodiverse group

I am needing any advice about being constantly misunderstood about my neurodiverse symptoms when they are expressed ,especially with the police and my university

Heya @DebM25 and welcome to the community. 😊

I'm late diagnosed, so I can empathise a fair bit with your problems. Have you spoken to them directly and explained you're neurodivergent and don't react as a NT would with many things? Are you having issues with your emotions?

Thank you so much for responding i am very grateful for your comments

I had 3 years of discussions with my university to the point where they acknowledged their treatment of me in meetings broke the Equality Act 2010 and offered me a small amount of money but nothing changed in their attitude and with my own department my head of department didn't do agreed remarks of assignments and caused a lower degree which means now a substantial complaint

The police are just totally ablist whenever I have brought up disability in relation to many harassment complaints about my neighbour and often laugh it off in front of me or ignore it

I have made complaints bit it is a lengthy process and stressful

Personally I am more scared of police than burglars.

I know I wouldn't be able to comply with their requests due to my conditions. But I wouldn't even be able to communicate that to them now. They have the power to forcefully gain entry to my property, arrest me, and even have me sectioned…

It shouldn't be that way. But it isn't going to change.

welcome to the community I just wanted to point out that this isn't just a sight for neurodivergent group here it's for all disabilities. There's a forum on the National Autistic Society which might be better for you if you are looking for people with intellectual disabilities.

However you can do both and I would suggest you have a look at the coffee lounge and the games den so you can have fun and hang out.

Deb, hi and welcome to the Scope forum 💜

I had to check what an intellectual disability was and I'm glad to say autism is not one!

There are a lot of us here and there is plenty of support. Keep asking questions or post new threads and people will find you. Trying to make ourselves understood is so hard isn't it?

    Hi durhamjaide200

I apologise for any unintentional offence .I thought I was posting on the neurodiverse and Autism Scope online community

I am not on the Autism spectrum, I have other neurodiverse conditions and normally they are not classified as an intellectual disabilities but mental health disorders.Of course it depends on whether your on the social or medical model

I have other disabilities but was struggling with my neurodiverse conditions and the Scope operator suggested I go into the online community

However if this is not the neurodiverse online community group I will leave and go there

    Thanks

Echoing Whatthe - Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder but it isn't an intellectual disability. Some autistic people do have intellectual impairments as cooccurring conditions with autism but I think the numbers are less than 50%.

Speaking from personal experience, this misconception can cause issues for autistic people because our support requirements are often different from those who have intellectual impairments. I'm sure it was an innocent mistake ;) but just for future reference :D

Hi Deb :) Welcome. You did indeed post in the section around autism and ND conditions, so you're good :) The whole site is for all disabilities but we all mix and you'll be welcome in any of the sections :D Just this area is the one that is most centred around ND stuff.

I was diagnosed as an adult, so I learned to mask a lot, but yeah, sometimes I have to stop and think how I want to explain something to make myself understood.

Definitely don't be leaving I was just saying that if you wanted another community with just neurodivergent people in then there's communities out there however we cater for people with physical disabilities, mental disabilities, medical conditions, mental health conditions and learning disabilities as well as neurodivergent conditions so just because you are posting in the neurodivergent section every one can see and comment even if they aren't neurodivergent themselves. However being neurodivergent is a disability and all of us on here has a disability.

    dose this make sense sweet?
