As this is a review then yes there's huge delays for review decisions and some are waiting a year for a decision, longer sometimes.
Even though there's delays forms still need to be returned. You could have rang for extra time to return them, rather than rush and they would have extended it by 2 weeks.
My recent review decision was made just under a year from receiving my review forms.

Congrats :) I remember the relief when my review came through successfully a couple of years ago and I didn't have to go through the whole appeals and tribunal process again.

Paper based this time around. I filled in the papers this time last year, got a letter in July saying they still havent looked at it and theyll automatically extend it for a year, and now the other day, got a letter saying they looked at it and got it for 6 years.

I wonder if the same applies to children's renewals

If they are claiming PIP then yes it will be the same. If it's DLA then I don't know if awards are extended if no decision is made by the end date of the award.
