What do you use the internet for?

It has been recognised that those without internet access are at a huge disadvantage to those who have access. So what do you use the internet for?

Gentle Reminder - Please do not use this to promote sites providing illegal services.

Everyday use for me:
Coming here
Email
Music
Watching films and box sets
Checking tube services or when the next bus will be
Catch up on the news.

For me it's my social life, I set up a beard group last year and we are now at 1300 members and I get to chat with other guys and have a laugh. Its something that I miss now that I can't work and the visitors stopped visiting years ago.
I also blog, I enjoy it and it's very therapeutic. I also review products on the website and it gives me a sense of purpose.

    Hi @DannyMoore,

I've never thought of researching how to play a game better. Something you might appreciate, I told my daughter in one of the Call of Duty games I found a hidden screen which lets you design your own weapons. I was very proud of my boomerang grenade until I tried it in the game and discovered it had a fatal flaw. She just looked at me and asked Why??? I mentioned it to a couple of friends at work, one laughed but the other one wanted to know how to get to the screen.

    @Zec Richardson

I have always preferred boards over most other forms I have seen on the internet over the years. Trouble so many seem to have disappeared in recent years.

@craig85 I was separated from my family for about 3 or 4 years and found I missed the films on sky but found that Now TV allowed me to have the films for about £10. Found most of the time when I did watch a film it was on my laptop.

Skimming through the answers so far the main uses seem to be researching and social life.

Two other things I use the internet for:

Shopping. A huge boon as I can do this task from home and someone else gets to pick it and deliver it. So we do a big shop about twice a month and pick up the little bits as we need them. I have also found that it helps to stop compulsive buying.

When we were with British Gas we were also able to get two gadgets which allowed us to put money on the Electric key and gas card. A huge bonus when the machines in the local shop were not working and having to go for a walk around, or when we needed it in after the shops shut.

The second use is for educational purposes, for my daughter when she was younger and for myself. While I do subscribe to one service because its features work for me much of it can be found free online as well. It is a good way to upskill if you need to change your skill set to be able to get back into work and you work at your own pace.

Alongside this I also subscribe to a few regular newsletter which keep me up to date on areas of interest.

@Geoark I have just come across this post, interesting to see all the different uses People have. I use it for the obvious e mail stuff. It has been a boon in being able to research all the info when dealing with appeals for ESA, PIP and the like, and of course to use the forums.
I am a gamer so I use it to play a mmorpg every night. If I could not do that I would be lost, it is my bit of escapism every night, and it keeps the old grey matter in trim too :-)

I buy train & coach tickets online as it's often cheaper to buy in advance before I travel. It also saves me a trip to the station to buy the ticket.

am not very good with technology but check my emails go on fb groups shop on amazon. watch music videos on youtube. fill in online forms. find out information online and go on one or two forums but I don't know how to do other things that people have mentioned. Oh yes I email people or send e cards and that's about it.

@suzylou you seem to have covered most things that have been listed.

Some of the other things I do is download free books, look for basic recipes which I can adapt. A lot depends on what it is you would like to do online.

I use the internet a lot for work, and for me booking gigs and general things like buying online emails and paying bills. I do not like using as a social thing  only now and then I love getting out and about to do that in person.

I use the net as a distraction mostly now days. I used to be a day trader dealing in foreign currencies on line but my focus has gone. Until my meds kick in I am useless physically ( not much better when they do ) Listen to the news, search and find stuff.  I get an Idea and run it down. I had a fancy to learn to play the harp and ran that idea all the way to how to make them. First one is in the process of being built :). I even found that you can build many stringed instruments from plastic plumbing pipes.
I can't get over not being able to do stuff now, always used to make things, repair cars etc can't manage big things now so looking into smaller stuff like chain saws and things I can do on a bench
Be all you can be, make  every day count. Namaste

@basiclee08 I agree with you that getting out, if you can, for socialising is a better idea. Wife and daughter communicate a lot through messenger even when they are in the same house as each other. Drives me nuts and refuse to do it. So if my daughter wants to show me something or talk to me she has to actually leave her room and come and see me.

We use Skype for Business at work rather than phones. I don't mind messages when it is someone from another office or working from home, but still prefer to talk to people face to face.

@CockneyRebel while I understand what you are saying I have  to admit your post made me smile. You are in the process of making your first harp, and then said you cannot get over being able to do stuff now :o

I would love to see a picture of the finished harp when you are done.
