All that money and they still can't land on our aircraft carriers 😂....and we're spending millions on refitting HMS Victory because we're so short of ships 😂 so if everyone sends their £10 Christmas bonus we might rule the seas again.

For me part of why I call it 'meaningless' is that the initial intention of it was to pay for a full christmas meal for a family (you could easily buy ingredients for a regular meal for less than a £1 back then), and possibly some gifts as well. That was it's meaning. It falls pretty far short of that now. Of course £10 is still £10 and that will help people and means something in that sense. People need far more help than just £10.

HMS Hermes was designed and refitted for VTAL harriers and helis, A veteran mate of mine served on it although i am not sure if it is still operational

It was sold to India in 1986 and still operational till 2017 @Razr . My post was meant to be tongue in cheek, but I often forget humour isn't taken too well.

I think it's more that it can be hard for humour to be passed through text sometimes because tone is often missing!

But the big difference there is those people are not long term sick or disabled and can get themselves back into work and change those circumstances.

If you are under 25 jsa is £71.

    This is not entirely accurate.

It also applies to people waiting for a work capability assessment, those who have been incorrectly found fit-for-work, those receiving Limited Capability for Work (LCW), and many other groups as well. It is incorrect to assume that anyone receiving only the basic rate of Universal Credit is well enough or able to work.

@Biblioklept, I am not talking from a place of privilege, I'm in the heat or eat bracket, so no heating again this year & that £10 won't help. It will never go up to what it should be or even be doubled, as there isn't the pot of cash needed to do anything. As it was introduced to help pay for Christmas dinner & some gifts with the pension then per week, £6.75, it would have been very helpful. Now, it will get you 11 second class stamps with a few pence left over.

I realise everyone is in a different position, but I would not consider myself to be coming from a place of privilege when my only income is esa and pip.

Maybe the bonus needs to be kept for those whose benefit is less than £100 a week or something.

I believe that bonuses should be awarded regardless of income, unless a person voluntarily refuses them. For example, if a disabled person pays £1000000 in taxes, then the state will suffer very much by paying him £10?

I received pip and not had the 10 bonus for a good few years now. Not sure why.

Those that claim just UC have never been entitled to the Xmas bonus. Same applies to those that just claim Income Related ESA/JSA and Income Support.

If you claim PIP/DLA/AA or contributions based/New style ESA, carers allowance you will be entitled to it. Some of those that claim these also claim UC so they will be entitled to it.

It'll only be paid in the payment period that surpassed the 1st december, so the next payment date after the 1st of december passed you will get those £10.
