Dysphagia thicken drinks
Hi,
I have Dysphagia level 2, which means I have a problem swallowing drinks and food etc. I normally use a special thickner called Thick & easy which I get on prescription, which i thicken water, juice, brews etc, unfortunately my prescription is late and I've run out, has anybody got any ideas what I could use as an emergency thickener for a drink, I've got a bit fed up of drinking gravy now. Lol.

You could try 111 for an emergency prescription.

Could fruit purees work? You can get them in pouches in the baby food section or in pots by the yogurts. Its not ideal but at least break from gravy! But contact whoever prescribed the thickener when you can, they might have some SLT approved ideas or even be able to help speed up the prescription delays.

What a good idea, never thought of fruit purees, I'm going to phone my SLT Monday morning, I even went to 3 chemist's and offered to buy it, but they order it in. I did try corn flour in a coffee with disastrous results. Thankyou, I'm off to ASDA Baby aisle.

Now I'm thinking about cornflour-thickened coffee….. 😅
Anyhow, I would also call 111 for an emergency prescription. You can also sometimes call your GP or speak to your pharmacist about it. They may have specific recommendations or alternative solutions until you can get your prescription.

Thanks for all your help. I'm ringing in the Morning. 1st thing. It doesn't help with it being a weekend.
