Did anyone see the interview this morning 24/11/24 on Laura Kuensberg's BBC1 political program? She was being pressed by Kuensberg as to why so many people are economicaly inactive and why they are mentally ill, and basically why aren't they working? What a horrible woman she is, to be fair Kendall was sticking up for us , saying the issues around mental health are very complicated and that each time this issue about benefits changes is brought up it causes mass panic and fear in already poorly people. What's this white paper she was talking about, i think she said it's being released next Tuesday? I may be mistaken but it does actually sound like she's on our side saying they have their own set of changes to the W.C.A and not the tories evil plans.

I always think that the only time politicians are on our side is when they're in opposition !!

It'll be interesting to see on Tuesday what their plans are though.

We'll know more about any planned WCA changes on Tuesday - Kendall refused to give details ahead of the release of the White Paper. Her focus remained squarely on youth mental illness / inactivity rather than other cohorts. Laura pressed her on the 400,000 plus who 'may' be adversely impacted by forthcoming changes but to no avail.

And isn't it just that, a whitepaper? I am correct in saying that nothing will actually change until the whitepaper is implemented which could take months/years?

You are correct. Parliamentary debates will follow - then a ping pong with the House of Lords before any legislation is passed. There could be some way to go yet but it is worth bearing in mind Labour's overwhelming majority and broad cross party support for changes to the current welfare system.

Those white papers are quite scary when they're first published but are then usually watered down before they become law.

It's probably best not to worry about it all on Tuesday.

I think another election would be a very bad thing indeed right now, although I don't think it will happen. I didn't vote labour in the last election, but I would rather give them some time to tell us what they actually think (rather than believe Pro Tory papers like the Mail and Express, who are busy trying to make us forget the fourteen years during which we, as disabled people, were not treated well.)

Our political system has been left in a mess by those fourteen years, plus COVID, plus Brexit. There isn't an easy out whoever is in charge.

Petitions for proper support and proper engagement with disabled people are far more helpful for us right now, I think, reminding the people in charge that we do have a voice and we aren't going away.

Also, a petition on the govt website can't trigger a GE. It can trigger a debate in Parliament, which is dominated by Labour. Only the Prime Minister can trigger an early election under current rules since the fixed term parliament law and the idea of parliament voting on it got nixed under the previous govt I think.

With any luck, it might shake them to stop them doing idiotic things like sending money to farmers abroad when our own will struggle. Pensioners sitting in freezing homes etc

Although the government have a big majority now, a lot of their MP's have small majorities, if they annoy too many people over the next few years they could all be out in 2029.

18-25 year olds and Mental Health has been mentioned often by Liz Kendall as of late.

When politicians mention the same topics on the media before legislation is put forward it's called priming.

The way it's framed by media as benefit recipients being a 'blight' on society is hurtful and triggering.

It's 'meaningless', unless you want the UK to turn into the USA, 'mob rule' mentality.

The Tories were in it for themselves, more 'fractions' then the '7 plus'.

It wouldn't matter if everyone who could vote signed the petition, Labour were elected to run the country, that is what they will do.

Democracy in full swing in the UK!!
