home pip assesment for teenager

Good afternoon all.
Have been reading all your posts re pip assesment at home and at centres.

We got our letter today and is in 2 weeks time for  a home visit. Just got over the stress of filling the forms plus son doing his GCSE'S now this. We were expecting it but now getting anxious.

He has CMT muscle waste condition with scolosis. He crawls up and down the stairs on most days and needs assistance just getting to the car!!!

My main worry he doesn't actually drive yet but when we renew car next year we will be looking for special adaptions so he can drive. But in the meantime I am the main driver of the car and do use the car without him in it. Can they ask me questions re car what I drive it for.

Apart from that, at least they can see what he is like in the home and we are not going to do anything different. As it's a morning appointment they probably will find him still in bed !!!

    jackiewackie,

The PIP assessment is about what your son can and cannot do. They might ask about your car but this should be so they can answer questions about your son, not about you. For example, they might ask if he could plan and follow a journey. They might ask about his mobility including how he gets into the car; he should definitely mention this to them (in case they don't ask, I'd make it clear he can't get in the car without help).

They will want to address their questions to him, not to you (unless you are his appointee).

At this stage you are just looking to get PIP. The DWP are not in charge of the car or the adaptations, but assuming you get the benefit (hope you do), then your son could spend the money on the adaptations, or, if he gets the enhanced rate of the mobility component of PIP, might choose to lease a car from the Motability scheme. Once he's passed his test, of course!

Do ask if there's anything else you need to know.

    Thank you.

He can follow and plan a journey that is OK.  The car we got now is on the mobobility system and runs out on in April  but I'm the appointed driver.
Then in April we will get special adaptions added on that he has passes his test if we get the enhanced rate.
Talking about tests would you know if there are specialised driving schools.
    Thank you

    Hi jackiewackie

I don't have anything to add to Will's advice and i'm afraid i don't know about specialist driving schools.

    Best wishes
