Pip

Good evening, I was awarded pip about a year ago now, when I was awarded my forms come back and I didn’t agree with some of the stuff on it, I believe I should of been awarded a higher rate but after the long exhausting process I didn’t have it in me to challenge it. I suffer with a few mental health issues and I have been diagnosed with one since my assessment and also developed another one which is having a big impact on me and I believe I deserve a higher rate because of it, I have been thinking for a while now I should maybe have another assessment, but I’m not quite sure where to go from here. If anyone has any experience or knowledge on this topic it would be a great help! Thank you.

Hi,

If you are still within 13 months since the decision then you can still appeal it through Mandatory Reconsideration, however you will need to state the reason for the delay.

If you are passed the 13 months then you would need to put in a change of circumstances instead, and if awarded a higher rate, it would only be from that date, not from the start of the claim.

You must be absolutely sure that you would qualify for enough extra points to gain a higher award before starting either process. PIP is based on your ability to complete tasks, not based on any diagnosis.

Hi thank you for your reply it’s very helpful, how will I know if I will qualify for enough points is there a form I can look through to see as I can’t remember the scoring! Thank you

You can see the list of PIP descriptors here.

PIP - table of activities, descriptors and points

They are split into Daily Living and Mobility parts.

You need at least 12 points in either section for an Enhanced award for that section.
