I’m Steve and I’m new to this community, so I wish to say hello and thanks for having me here.

I’m a disabled person with heart failure and have just had my wife leave me only a few weeks ago after 20 years of marriage.

Just need a community of like minded people to chat to and see what I am eligible for as I can’t get a mortgage and my wife will take the house in it’s entirety as she does have a 97% stake in it anyway and I will be soon unable to live there and have nowhere to go or live.

I’m on UC and Pip, with mental health issues and this will put me in a bad place.

So what can I do!

I’m struggling

Hi there and a very warm welcome the community.

I am very sorry to hear about your health issues and your marriage break up.

I would strongly advise you to seek professional advise regarding your rights to the marital property and any other assets because 20 years of marriage is a long time and you may well be entitled to more than you think you are.

Hi @stevie26, welcome to the community. Sorry to hear about your break up, that must be really difficult to deal with. As luvpink mentioned, it may be worth getting some legal advice about your rights here to see what you might be entitled to with the house.

Have you spoken to your local council to see if they can get you registered on the housing waiting list?

You might also like to speak to Citizens Advice or a housing adviser to see if there are any steps you can take towards getting a place of your own. Advicelocal has a directory to find local advisers.

If you find yourself in a position where you might become homeless, Shelter can often help advise you: Housing advice from Shelter - Shelter England

Hope things start improving for you soon.

    thanks everyone.

I’ve been told to get a solicitor who deals with family law and also specialising in disability as part of that.

Slate & Gordon and OTP come out top. So will speak to them first and then get someone closer to me to take over.

    They charge so much!

    @stevie26

I am pleased to hear that you are seeking professional advice because you have rights.

Your wife cannot just take the house after twenty years of marriage you will be entitled to your share, and any other assets you may have.

Its a difficult and stressful process but stick with it and get what is rightfully yours.

Welcome, we are all here to support each other.

Have a good talk to CAB and family law solicitor (usually expensive but apply for legal aid)

Most marital homes have to be split 50/50, usually no matter who has paid for what.

Do not verbally agree or sign anything until full legal advice received.
