Severe Disability Premium
Hi I'm wondering if anyone can give me any advice.
Out of the blue last month I received a phone call from DWP saying there had been a "review" and inviting me to fill in IS10 forms for SDP both for my current address and my previous address which I left in 2016.
I filled the forms in and don't have a decision yet but DWP confirm they have received them.
On the face of it I meet the criteria for SDP for the full length of the time since I claimed PIP ie nobody claiming Carers Allowance, lived alone, etc.
My questions are:-
- Does the fact that they initiated this and sent me forms for both my old and new address indicate that they are contemplating backdating the award to 2016?
- Do they in fact backdate awards for that long?
- How long is it likely to take for such a backdating decision to be made?
Thanks in advance.

1/ If there's entitlement for that whole time then yes it will be paid from the date you became entitled to it.
2/ Answered above.
3/ If entitled going forward then it should be included with your benefit going forward.. (Income Related ESA/JSA/Income Support or Pension Credit)
Any money owed could potentially take several weeks, maybe longer due to the length of time it is.

Thank you for your response.
Just to update you I have been awarded SDP from 10th January.
As for backdating I haven't heard anything yet but have now received a further letter enclosing another IS10 form for an even earlier address. This has come from Hull Service Centre GMS team with an 0300 telephone number.
Has anyone had any experience with this team?
Thanks once again in advance.

I've not had any experience with that service centre. It's not usual for them to ask for further information when they are looking at an historic claim.

Thank you.
I'm assuming you meant not unusual rather than not usual.

The only thing I thought was a bit odd was the 0300 phone number rather than the usual 0800.

Yes I meant not unusual, rather than usual. It maybe an old standard letter and the number is the old number. DWP haven't used 0300 numbers for many years.

Just to mention I have now received a lump sum payment for backdated Severe Disability Premium.
I have a further question.
I am assured that this lump sum is disregarded for the purposes of my ESA going forward but I have now received a Migration Notice to claim Universal Credit.
How will the DWP react when I change to UC? Will it still be disregarded? I understood because this was their error it was an indefinite disregard but how can I communicate this to the DWP?
I am starting to get worried about the UC award.
Also I have just read that if you transfer money into a savings account then they don't disregard it
Any response would be appreciated.
Thank you.

It should continue to be disregarded because you aren't ending your ESA claim, you are transferring to UC.
When you claim UC you put in how much money you have as part of the application form.
You can then write a note on your Journal (online UC account) under Payment option, and write that on X date you received X amount, and this was a payment due to official DWP error and therefore it needs to be disregarded from calculation of your capital.
It's not true that the disregard ends if you transfer it to another bank account.

hi my daughter was doing a benefit check online last week and as I recieve pip and income related esa she thinks I'm entitles to severe disabilty premium. I rand dwp and answered a few questions over the phone. I only rang up the 10th of March 2025. The lady on phone wouldn't explain anything at all. Does anyone know what happens next ? Some forums say within 6 days I should hear by phone call or letter as it goes back to 2021 it might take longer?
most replies are from years ago anyone help me please my anxiety is through the roof.

Did you click on View Post, and read through both pages of that thread?
Advice has been given there to someone in the exact same situation with regards to timescales, procedures, what to do if X occurs and so on.
All recent information and still relevant/correct in terms of your questions

thank you kimmy I'm sorry but I don't understand it at all.

If my case is anything to go by you may here something in a few weeks time. The questions you answered probably related to an IS10 form asking questions related to whether you are entitled to SDP.
If it is an official error and you you were entitled to SDP since 2021 it should be backdated to then.

good luck. Mine was awarded from 2019 to 2024.
nobody informed me of the sdp I had to fund this out my self x1 -
thank you, it was only because my daughter checked online for me or I wouldn't even know anything about it.
how long did it take for you to recieve a letter saying you have been awarded it?
I'm very impatient lol anxiety is in over drive and I only rang up Monday.

It does take several weeks because it all has to be worked out and checked as a backdated payment and this involves a few departments. You will probably get a letter to say you've been awarded it in 2/3 weeks. Then your payments going forward will contain the SDP. The backdated payment will take a few more weeks as I say and if they authorize it you will probably get a phone call
