rang pip they said a reveiw form was being sent. i have read they send it 12 months before your pip ends . is  this true
i have lost my award letter and have no idea how long it was granted for. any insight would be useful

Review forms used to be sent out about 6 months before your award ends. As backlogs are considerable long for a lot of people they may send it earlier than this. 

You can ask PIP when your current award is due to end.
If you do receive a review form you must fill it in and return it with your supporting evidence. You can ask for extra time to return it and they will give and extra couple of weeks.
