Portrait Artist of the Year - Applications Open

I am part of the team spreading the word to artists who may wish to apply to series 10 of Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year and series 9 of Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year competition. You may have had members of the team contact you in previous years in relation to the show so please forgive the repetition of information.  

Every year we get well over a thousand entries, but we’re always keen to raise awareness of the competition to ensure a diverse range of applications from people who may not have come across the show or subscribe to Sky. As such we would be extremely grateful if you could let people know about the competition (and encourage them to enter).  

Artists enter with a self-portrait or a landscape painting depending on which competition they’re applying for. Artists selected to take part in the heats have four hours to paint either a celebrity sitter or a specific landscape within the UK. The Portrait competition heats will be filmed at the Battersea Arts Centre in London in April 2023. The Landscape competition heats will be filmed over the summer 2023.   

We’re very proud of the fact that beyond an entertaining television series the programme has become a reputable art competition in its own right. Unlike the competition format TV series that many are familiar with, we do not cast for characters – choosing instead to have our expert panel of judges select participants based on the quality of their submission painting. The programme’s success depends on the standard of the art produced, so from the outset, it is a genuine celebration of good art and an intelligent, fascinating examination of the artistic process.
