Good Morning!

Ive only recently applied for Attendance Allowance for my Dad who has Stage 4 Lung cancer and now the cancer has spread to his brain and he is bed bound at home atm with this terminal illness,, so my Mum is looking after him 24/7 now and I've been researching on the GOV.UK website for her (she is not online) about carers allowance for her,, but it says that claiming carers allowance would interfere with her pension...Have I misread it and can she qualify for carers allowance without it interfering with her pension?? #ThanxInAdvance

Apologies if there's any spelling mistakes and poor grammar because I'm not sleeping well at all atm with the added stress,  so my concentration levels are not very good.

If she's claiming her state pension and it's more than £69.70/week then she's can't be paid carers allowance because it's classed as an over lapping benefit. She will have an underlying entitlement to it.
This means they means they maybe entitled to Pension Credit.. (or it will increase their Pension credit by £38.85/week, if they are already claiming it)
If they're not claiming it whether they're entitled to it will depend on their circumstances.

My Dad has been in and of hospital recently,, but he is now back home,,  and I have to say the Macmillan nurse (& she is only a young lass) has been absolutely amazing with all the help  + she even went out of her way to fast track a hospital bed to be fitted at their home, with him not able to walk now, so is bed bound and that  helps my mum alot with my Dad being a tall bloke & the nurses making daily visits to their home have been brilliant too...

My Dad is on pension credit,, but my Mum claims state pension,, so its pointless for her trying to claim Carers Allowance then?

Your dad will not be claiming pension credit by himself as it's a means tested benefit then they will both need to claim it as a couple.
Your mum can claim carers allowance but can't be paid it if her state pension is more than £69.70/week. She will have what's known as an underlying entitlement to it. This means that their pension credit will include the carers premium of £38.85/week. Therefore, yes it's worth claiming it.
Does your mum claim a disability benefit herself such as AA, DLA mid/high rate care or PIP daily living?

That may not be true because we know nothing about Lee's circumstances.

Anyone can be carer, circumstances Lee76 we do not know, Calcotti is right. The carers ruling is there to see and follow if Lee76 circumstances can do the ruling why not do it.

The question wasn't about them claiming it for their self. They were asking on behalf of their mum.

Poppy, you are right about Lee's Mum. I was only saying someone can claim carers allowance if not Lee's Mum if circumstances to care for Lee's Dad.

But they cannot claim CA if they work and earn more than £132/week. Similarly if they are claiming UC there may be no point claiming CA. Just saying someone can claim CA is very misleading.

My Mum has been lucky enough not to claim a disability benefit in her life...She is not a millionaire mind you because she was a cleaner,, but is now retired at 74 years of age and it's a bit of a sham that she can't get any added help - financially with caring, seeing she has put into the system all of her life.

Sorry for the late reply,, but the carers allowance is not for me btw. I'm asking about it on behalf of my mum because she's not online.

As already advised, as they claim PC, if she claims CA, even though the CA will not be paid, the PC will be increased by the carer addition (£38.85/week).

The NI she has paid in the past is irrelevant for CA. Her NI record has given her her SP entitlement.

Apologies for my last message which sounded a bit bitchy...I have to quit my job to be his carer because he's needs my full time support, so I can help my mum out with the responsibilitys which she is struggling with, so I've applied for carer element last week. Which I think I am eligible with my Dad being on the enhanced attendance allowance..How long does the carer element take to process?

Carers element is part of Universal Credit. Providing you’re not claiming LCWRA element for yourself then you can claim carers element. It should be included on your next statement.
Assuming you’re not claiming carers allowance or carers element for looking after someone else.

I've just realised I've made a pigs ears with my change of circumstances regarding carers with putting my dads middle name that differs from his  Attendance allowance higher award letter - How do I rectify this error what I made ?

    Kind regards

I've just realised when I changed my circumstances for caring for my Dad...I made a big error regarding his middle name that differs from his Attendance Allowance higher rate award letter...How can edit this mistake? Would I have to change my circumstances on UC again? Feel like such an idiot atm...

    Kind regards
