Student Loan - Special Support Loan

Hi there!

I’m in the process of applying for my student loan for September of this year and have found out that I should be entitled to the “Special Support Loan”, due to being declared unfit to work for a period of 28 weeks or more.
I’ve searched everywhere but I can’t actually find how out much this loan is. Does anyone know roughly how much I would be entitled to?

Thanks so much!

    Hello @Beansprout

I haven't heard of the term "Special Support Loan" but wonder if it could be a general term for the extra support that is out there to help?

I found a list of extra support on the GOV website as well as a student finance calculator which I think would be worth giving a try.

Do you mean the "Special Support Element"?  If so that is based on parental income as well as what benefits you receive and is a proportion of your student maintenance loan that is discounted by the DWP for income purposes.

Student loan is treated as income and so the majority of students get little or no ESA/UC if they are in receipt of a student maintenance loan, or are eligible for one, EVEN IF THEY DO NOT CLAIM IT...this last bit is really important to be aware of and sounds ridiculous but is true...been there.
It's not extra money and it's not a set amount.  It's calculated on the income and benefits as above.
Apologies if you mean something else!  :)

In all honesty @Beansprout, your best point of contact would be the Student Loan Company. If you feel comfortable with phoning them, or can get someone else to call on your behalf, I would recommend phoning them - just because they often respond faster through the telephone.

I received a ‘top up’ on my maintenance loan when I was studying at undergraduate level. With this, I am mindful it can vary for everyone. Unfortunately, we wouldn’t be able to tell you how much extra you will receive because it is based on a number of circumstances integrated.

Please don't hesitate to let us know if we can do anything else to support you  :)
