This is great, a meteorite is heading my way and due to strike at 9.30am, I gain comfort in the knowledge that the Government will hold a COBRA meeting at 10.00am,   :o

Yes it is a text that we will receive
When it arrives you simply hit OK to accept it and continue doing whatever you were doing before

Will it actually display the message in Welsh?
How will it know who speaks that language?
Or will it go by location?
In which case - what about English people in Wales?
Hello @Wibbles from what I can tell it looks like in Wales the text will be coming through in Welsh and English, as it has been quoted.

If it's ever an important life and death message a lot in Wales will be dead reading all the constanants  :p

I speak Welsh fluently but struggle reading and writing it

But how do they know who's in Wales?
    And who speaks Welsh?
    Will Sedbury get dual language?

If I had to guess @Wibbles, as I'm not an expert, it might be linked to the GPS/Home location of the phone, or perhaps an individual's government records and language preferences. Your guess is as good as mine!

In my experience of attending a welsh university, pretty much all large-scale communications were in both Welsh and English :)

As Sedbury is in Gloucestershire, I expect it will be just in English.

It's law that all signs and notifications in Wales have to be bilingual ... some of us are fiercely proud of our heritage and defensive of our language.  Would be uproar from both sides if they did it in one or the other ... me, I live and let live.  As long as there's the choice

Strangely out and about myself and my wife speak Welsh, at home we converse in English or Wenglish  :s

I was unaware of this. I'm not sure I approve of this use of my phone without my choosing it.

    Still, we shall see.

Exactly - but I wonder just how accurate it will get positioning ?
My IP address often puts in Exeter and Bournemouth - but am somewhere inbetween

Ah I see @Wibbles it would be interesting to know how accurate it is!

I wouldn't have thought it would go by IP address as it won't be a computer/ browser receiving it

Mobile providers will have given details of users ?  Mast specific ?

Technically they aren`t using your phone.  They`re sending out a message to all phones that are capable of receiving and displaying the message.

I see the point, especially now all the sirens have been taken down, far easier way/cheaper way of doing it, when the Dam in Whalley Bridge almost collapsed not that long ago our nephew lived very close to it.
Sadly we live in a world where far too many people see bad in everything, mores the pity.
We still have a war time siren here in Plymouth dockyard and it goes off every day without fail.  It`s to be used should there be a nuclear accident in the dockyard but is tested every day at 11:30 on the dot.
Some people say it`s to remind "jan dockies" that it`s lunchtime :)

I think we might have to differ on that one. My phone is capable of receiving the message, even though I haven't subscribed to it, so I need to opt out if I don't want it.

It's not like I can do anything about an impending event. Even if I could leave my room under my own steam, I can't leave my home.

There are thousands like me in this country who will be powerless to act on the information. It might be better if the Govt didn't offer us the chance to panic.

We lived within 50 feet of a war time siren that was tested every week when I was a child. During the war there was time to remove to shelters but there are no shelters to go to around here.

I can fully understand a warning for potential dam failures, that must have been very frightening, but at least it seems like some action could have been taken.

I think I would just rather be relatively happy for what might be my last 10 minutes of a nuclear warning.

I'm sure there are others who think differently.

What would you do in those ten minutes?
I`d rather not know, to be honest.

Yes, that was pretty much my point. If I don't know, I can't panic or get upset.

Disable the functionality on your phone - as I have done.
