Anyone around West Sussex area? Interested in a social group to start

Hi everyone

just wondering if there is much interest for people around West Sussex to meet as a social group, maybe for food, cinema, etc.

I work, struggle to stay in work due to the mobility and pain I am in etc. but I also struggle finding friendships, as I have crutches to get about or a mobility scooter for more than a short distance. Although to me this doesn’t mean I can’t do ‘normal things’. I find others can’t relate to me

    Hello @jakelockyer1

    Welcome to the community! :)

Just to note, we do not recommend people in the community meet up with other people as the community is anonymous and we cannot guarantee your safety.

Have you thought about seeing what locals groups there are in your area, that may align with your interests? :)

    Hi @Hannah_scope

whoops, sorry I didn’t realise that.

I’ve tried searching online but there doesn’t seem to be anything around at all, which is such a shame.

    It's no problem @jakelockyer1 :)

That is such a shame! Have you tried websites like meetup? Sometimes gatherings and groups start off remotely and move to be hybrid with day out events.

Hello @jakelockyer1 have you tried asking your local authority about any clubs or societies, or looked into social events at local libraries or museums? It might be worth a shot :)

It can feel difficult when people can't relate to your lived experience of disability, and it can feel a bit isolating, socially. Perhaps you could focus on a passion or hobby that you like, and find friendships through that?

Hi @jakelockyer1 I think your best bet is to go to your local pub. That's what I do, people speak to me and don't seem to worry that I am on a mobility scooter. I have quite friendly people around me. So just get out there and give it a shot. You most certainly can do "normal things". I hope you will find friends, but you won't find them if you stay at home.

@L_Volunteer I did not express myself well. Going in to pubs isn't everyone's cup of tea and in any event you only make acquaintances and not friends. This is fine for me, but not for people who are looking to make proper friends.
