Social security payments drag everyone down to the same financial level.
Be it benefits or grants or anything related
And if you have the audacity to work hard and gain more than the allowable savings - you get punished by having your basic income reduced to bring you back in line with everyone else.

It may be of interest to you @wibbles and @vikingqueen , but part of the reason we have a welfare state in the UK is because when the government wanted to conscript for war, they found out that around a third of men were too sickly to be of use in the war. The government realised they needed they needed to have the men healthier in case they needed to fight. This ended the lassie faire attitude and started the welfare state as we now know it.
