You won't be able to use the original PIP award letter if it's dated outside of 1 year anyway. The same applies for everything when you need to send proof of benefits entitlement, it needs to be dated with that year.

    Thanks for the update!

Looks like more hassle than it's worth.  :/   I don't understand why they've made this so much more complicated than the free tax with a higher PIP award?  Almost seems like it's purposely prohibitive.

I'd like to hope taxing the car this way would be quicker, as 7 weeks is obviously far too long to wait after getting a different car.  With almost all cars post-2017 costing nearly £200 a year to tax now, that's a huge extra outlay when changing car if you tax it first and then claim half back.

Also, how do we request another letter for the next year?  Presumably that's going to be telephone only?  :(

Applying for 50% reduction has remained the same since PIP was introduced 10 years ago. I think it's terrible that they haven't made the process much easier over that decade.

Requesting a copy of your PIP award would be telephone or you can write to them but they don't always respond to letters.

    Hi,

I sent my forms off with all the info (log book, pip letter etc) to DVLA to get back 50% car tax back. The DVLA received this on the on 17th. I am getting worried that they have not got back or sent my documents back. Does anyone know how long does the process usually take?

I rang them this morning for information and was advised they are a lot behind. I now have to tax and be refunded instead of taxing by letter or our road tax will not be processed in time.

They are working through them. Last year I got my refund in 10 days, she did not indicate how long it would be.

In answer to your second question, If you contact the pip advice line  they know about the award letter needing to be renewed and will send it out pretty quickly.

    Edit
Sorry I missed your note saying you had got the refund. Great, thanks, so now I have a timeline too. 😀

I was awarded standard rate on mobility. I had already paid for a year's car tax. so I phoned dvla and asked about the 50% refund. I was told I could get a refund and to write in. Which I did. A couple of weeks later I got a cheque. However, I had appealed my award and prior to getting to tribunal, the dwp lapsed my appeal and I was awarded enhanced. I wrote to dvla explaining the situation and that the 50% reduction is now 100% and asking about the remaining 50% refund from that same period. I included my appeal award letter and my certificate. A week or so later I got a letter from them, which was stamped KWE. It said that "my enquiry will be investigated and if I'm due a refund I will receive it in 6-8 weeks" I was quite surprised by this the word investigated has made me very anxious. Has anyone else had this.
