Hi @Dan62, we can try to help you with where to find that advice and information.

Can I ask what locations you've already looked?

I can recommend reaching out to your local Citizen's Advice Bureau, if you haven't already. They have advisers who have knowledge and experience across all the topics you've brought up!

If you go into a bit more detail about each we can also try to help find information for you. Just be sure to not give us any personal information!

    Good afternoon community I
Have many different issues all at once
I'm homeless, after my ex partner forced the sale of the property we bought together.
The money I received for the house has some family debts to pay off ,but they would let me invest it back if I could find somewhere in the Birmingham area.
Also i am in receipt of UC and stressed out after a 1hr 15 minutes of questions
Need some assistance. And I suffer with spondylitis and chronic lower back problems.
Really appreciate any help and support to sort it out.

    Kind regards.

Hi @Dan62, are you talking to your council about the homelessness? They should be able to support you in at least getting shelter.

Do UC know you are currently homeless?

Regarding Universal Credit and assets. If you have over £16,000 then you often won't get anything from Universal Credit.

However, I believe if you intend to use the money to purchase a home when you do not have one then you are given a time period in which to purchase said home. I do not know the length of time off the top of my head but I will try to look it up.

Regardless, you should inform UC when you get the money and mention how it is going to be used to purchase a home as you are currently homeless. They must be informed of this.

I did find this bit of information here ADM Chapter H2: Capital Disregards (publishing.service.gov.uk) Specifically this part here

Amount to be used to purchase premises H2119 Where a person has received an amount within the past 6 months which is to be used to purchase premises that the person intend to occupy as their home, that amount can be disregarded from the calculation of that person’s capital where it
    1. is attributable to the proceeds of the sale of premises formerly occupied as their home or
    2. has been deposited with a housing association (see H2045) or
    3. is a grant made to the person for the sole purpose of purchasing a home .
This can mean the capital can be disregarded for up to 6 months. However the onus of proof is on you, so you must contact Universal Credit to tell them of this when you get the funds from the house sale.

I would highly recommend contacting your Local Citizen's Advice Bureau. Find your local Citizens Advice - Citizens Advice They will be able to help you with informing the DWP about this so you can keep your UC while looking for a home to buy.

I'd recommend contacting your local citizen's advice bureau. CAB Birmingham can be contacted on the following telephone number 0808 2787 990.

You can find other ways to contact them by following this link
Citizens Advice Birmingham - Citizens Advice. They can give you advice about your specific situation on all these areas you are concerned about.

I hope you can get it all sorted, I know it's a complex situation!

This only applies if you lived in the home you sold, when it was sold. Dan says he's homeless, so if that's the case it may not be disregarded.

Once the money goes into your bank you will need to report the changes to UC. Paying off debt is allowed when claiming UC and is in the UC regulations 2013.

If after you've paid all your debts you still have more than £16,000 then entitlement to UC will end.
I would appreciate it if members wouldn't tag me please. I have all notifcations turned off and wouldn't want a member thinking i'm being rude by not replying.
If i see a question that i know the answer to i will try my best to help.
