What makes a film a Christmas film? [Day 9]

We’ve all heard people yelling loudly that Die Hard is a Christmas film, as is Gremlins. But the real question is WHY are films Christmas films?
Do they just need to be set at Christmas, or is it something deeper?
Does there need to be a strong “good will to all men vibe” or is a bit of snow enough?
Does that mean The Thing is a Christmas film?
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
