Hi this is a strange one but just wondered if anyone else had the same thing?

So each night before I go sleep I feel like i'm dying, Like I get weird feelings in my heart and it kinda flutters to the point I jump a few times before drifting off. Its a weird sensation and I can't really explain it, but feels like I'm dying in a way and is concerning sometimes. I have had it go on for a few years now.

I don't know whats causing it whether a build up of anxiety or stress but I have it every night before I go sleep.

Just wondered if anyone else had a similar experience?

I have all sorts of weird stuff when I sleep like dreams I can sort of control and crashing my car and doing stuff I would be doing if there was nothing wrong but never had this

    Does it cause you distress?

May be worth trying to have a chat with someone qualified if you are able to get in touch with anyone, GP, psychologist or a decent support worker or someone?

Its scary, its hard to explain but everytime I'm about to drift off I jump out my skin. I don't know whats causing it. But I get this like weird chest pain and I feel like my heart is fluttering it happens a few times before I finally go sleep. I'm okay once I am asleep though.

I might speak to my GP about it, but happens every night now and only started like 2 years ago.

It's best to speak to your gp about it @rubin16, if nothing else it will put your mind at rest

@rubin16 I get something similar to this. I feel like my heart is slowing down and is about to stop.

Just as I think I'm getting to sleep I jump up eyes wide open. Then I close my eyes and it happens 4 or 5 times before I finally get some sleep.

I have been thinking maybe it's my medication (quetiapine/fluoxetine).

yeah thats exactly what happens to me, it takes me like 5 or 6 times to get to sleep as I feel it and it makes me jump with my eyes wide open again.

I don't know whats causing it but its scary and happens every night now. I might contact my GP next week and see.

That cant be fun at all @rubin16 I had something similar many years ago. It's almost like a really big, random jump scare out of nowhere just as you're drifting off right?  For me it was apparently my anxiety, but I'd definitely be speaking to your GP about this though, just to be on the safe side.

Those sudden jolts to do with different states of sleep can be quite scary!
I don't know if you take any medication but have experienced something myself where I felt I wasn't taking enough breaths and my chest felt 'fluttery'. This was due to my meds ( I think it was the pregabalin interacting)  and was quickly sorted by my GP and spacing my meds differently .
Also doing some relaxation stuff to slowly de stress and gently fall asleep of a night helps me with those jumpy jolts, like staying off my phone and turning the TV off so my brain has a chance to slow down, avoiding it being stimulated if that makes sense.
Have a chat with your GP for peace of mind. Hope you manage a good night's sleep.

Could be meds, a new side effect after time?
Do you have anything particular bothering you more? Or anyone?
Do you eat late at night? Theres condition called gastrocardiac syndrome, nothing to be scared of look it up.
I had the falling off cliff at the moment of sleep thing many years ago for months causing serious sleep deprivation when I had a major breakdown. I had to sleep in day. I know this feeling I feel for you. I get it every now and then when Im seriously exhausted or been around vile people.

It sounds like they're sleep starts, sometimes as you drift off, you can think you're falling & then your body jumps. They're quite normal & not really anything to worry about, although, yes, can be startling when they happen.
