National Fish and Chip Day! What's your order at the chippy?

Although technically it was yesterday to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, usually it's today so I thought we could still have some chippy celebrations!

National Fish and Chip Day is headed up by the National Edible Oil Distributors Association (NEODA)… who knew that existed?! Believe it or not, fish and chips were quite important during the war, so NEODA decided to move the date to the 6th June this year to celebrate the nation's love for chips and commemorate those who gave their lives to keep our country safe.

During the war, fish & chips was often considered the British national dish and the Government worked hard to safeguard the supply of fish and potatoes to keep up morale. Fish and chips were one of the few foods that weren't rationed, so families could still tuck in to a chippy tea to keep their spirits up when other foods were in short supply.

Even with lots of other food options around, I still think the love for a good old fashioned chippy continues to this day. Not quite as cheap as it once was, but still tasty!

So if you didn't have to consider any of your current dietary needs, what would your perfect fish and chip order be? Are you a mushy peas fan? Gravy? Curry sauce? Battered sausage? What about gherkins and pickled eggs?

Mine would be pretty basic: Just chips, mushy peas, plenty of salt and vinegar and a bit of ketchup on the side. Wrapped in paper of course, none of this polystyrene box malarkey! The paper gives it extra flavour 😁 What's your order?

Coor you're making me hungry now, I do love a chippy tea!

Despite trying not to order cod these days (for sustainability reasons) it's still my favourite. Complete with a pile of chips, some curry sauce and a gherkin. Plenty of salt and vinegar obviously. 😁

I'll have fish and chips, no salt but plenty of vinegar 😋 I'm with you @Rosie_Scope I think it was the printers ink off the newspaper that gave it that special taste 😜

Does each newspaper have a different flavour? Does a paper with coloured print taste different to a normal black and white print? I'm sure someone must've researched this.

Definitely, @vikingqueen! Mmmm, tasty printer ink!

Someone must have, but if not, someone needs to @Albus_Scope. Probably wouldn't be hard to gather some willing participants to eat chips for science, but I don't think many chippies use newspaper these days now that we have boring things like food standards 😄

Although maybe if you brought your own they would wrap it up for you!

I will be deep diving into this on my weekend off I'm sure. 😆

I have found an interesting article entitled "Crispness level of potato chips affects temporal dynamics of flavor perception and mastication patterns in adults of different age groups" which I will definitely be reading later.

I had a fish wrapped in the Daily Mail but it didn't taste as nice as normal; I decided it was probably off because it wasn't fished from the UK and came from another country 🤨

Yummy, fish, chips and curry sauce, just salt and no vinegar. Vinegar spoils the curry. Actually this is what we are having for tea this evening. Sadly not wrapped in newspaper.

    Some excellent orders here!

Does anyone go for scraps? The little crispy bits of left over batter. I used to love getting a few of those on top of my chips 😋
