Disabled people's voices must not be ignored in the lead up to the election on 4 July 2024.

Scope have created the Local Disability Data Map. The map shows local data on areas that disabled people have told us are priorities in the upcoming election and beyond. These include:

  • The extra cost of disability
  • The Disability Employment Gap
  • The proportion of disabled people have experienced negative attitudes
  • The number of disabled residents

The map is a tool you can use to share these facts with your candidates quickly and easily, and make them see what they need to do if elected.

Now is the time to tell your local candidates what life is like where you live and demand they put supporting disabled people at the top of their agenda.

I just tried it out and I was surprised just how high that disability price tag is in my local area! Have you contacted your local candidate? Is there anything that surprises you about your area?

Try the Local Disability Data Map to explore what life is like for disabled people where you live.

Thanks for sharing this @Rosie_Scope! I've sent the Map to my candidates, so I'm hoping they'll get back to me soon 🙂 I was disheartened, though not wholly surprised, to learn that 70% of disabled people in my region have faced negative attitudes 😕

@Tori_Scope, 80% have experienced negative attitudes in my area! It definitely demonstrates how much needs to change!

Greetings wherever in the land you may be! Brighton Pavilion comes up 73% negative. That is not my experience. Between me and the nearest patch of grass and trees off to which my rollator and I poddle are numerous low white walls for sitting on. It is standard that a passerby will say something along the lines of 'Are you OK, love?" When a wheel on the rollator twisted, a passerby untwisted it, enabling me to totter home. Can't remember the exact details but a restaurant had revolving doors and two lovely young men went to considerable lengths to get me and rollator in.

@Rosie_Scope I sent the email to the candidates in my constituency Belfast North.

I was delighted to get a personal reply from one candidate by post who registered with Scope to further understand needs of disabled constituents.

    Thank you Scope!

This is interesting, but I'm wondering what a negative attitude really means?

If we asked non-disabled people 'Have you experienced negative attitudes in the past 5 years?' I'm sure the percentage would also be high. British people aren't known for their positivity!

I wonder too. Central London is not renowned for its manners. In 2005 I started to walk with one stick. That became two. Between 2005 and 2016 I commuted from Outer London to the West End by Tube and/or by bus. I never had any aggro from anyone.

Thanks for raising this @overlyanxious! It's good to hear from you.

The attitudes stats on the Map came from our wider attitudes research. But the relevant question to get these stats was

Have you experienced any of the following [attitudes or behaviours] from people over the last 5 years? Think about this in relation to you as a disabled person, or towards your health conditions or impairments.

    I hope that helps 🙂

I just wanted to thank everyone who sent the Map to their prospective parliamentary candidates 🙂 Scope supporters like you reached 2,833 candidates from 567 constituencies in just 3ish weeks, which is incredible 💜

The Map's still live for you to explore. I look forward to sharing some opportunities to engage with the new Government with you soon!

Well I won't be getting a response now my local MP has lost his seat and taken his facebook page down.

We have a new Labour MP I have never heard of.

    What a disgrace!
