Changing vehicle and taxation class to disabled1

Having a bit of a nightmare with this. Long story short. I bought a new vehicle two weeks ago privately and I sold my old vehicle a week ago also privately. I had to pay and tax the new vehicle two weeks ago to drive it away and I have received the new logbook just the other day. I transferred ownership of the one I sold when I sold it a week ago and I have received an acknowledgement from DVLA that I am no longer the keeper. I also requested a new certificate of entitlement from the DWP in order to change the tax status of my new vehicle at a post office.

Went to the post office today with all the documents in order but the computer says no and the lady behind the counter did not know why and just suggested I called DVLA. After an hour trying to get through (I requested a call back) I got to speak to someone who confirmed I was no longer the keeper of the old vehicle but couldnt really offer a reason as to why it wouldnt go through on the new one and she said she would put me through to someone who was more experienced in this procedure. After a further hour on hold, nothing. No answer. I gave up.

What I wanted to know was if there was some kind of time lag in the system between taking the exemption off one vehicle and applying it to another and more importantly if there is can I leave it a few months and try again. The reason for that is I am going away for several months in just under two weeks time. She seemed to think I would get the refund from when I taxed the vehicle but I'm not so sure. I am pretty sure I did this all online the first time I did this about five years ago and it was dead simple.

It's never been possible to tax a vehicle online for the first time when claiming free road tax. It's always only been possible to do that at your local post office. This is to do with the taxation class of the V5C needing to be changed to disabled.

I don't know if there's any delay or not but that shouldn't apply now anyway because you've received confirmation from DVLA for your previous vehicle.

All I can advise is that you return to the post office in a few days and try against… frustrating I know.
