mate of mine is taking a big step Monday

After advice from his MH advisor because of PTSD due to racist attack he's going to go out in his powerchair with his kippah (skullcap) on with his mate. As you can imagine he's very scared he says his belly will be in knots next week, any advice for him I can pass on?

That's amazing @wandering_chris, I know it can't be easy for him to do but it's great he's taking his MH advisor's advice and pushing himself.
I can only advise that he takes his time and is kind to himself, recognising what a big step it is.
Would you let us know how he gets on?

Hi @wandering_chris π
I'm so sorry that your friend was subjected to a racial attack. We all deserve to live in peace and it must be so hard for them that that peace has been shattered.
Where are they planning to go? Is it somewhere nice so the environment can hopefully help them relax?
It's great that they're already seeing someone about their PTSD, that's a big step. I have anxiety and used to struggle to leave the house. I found it helped if I started with shorter trips out with a friend to very familiar places and gradually increasing them. Kind of like an exposure therapy, if you've heard of that?
I really hope they're able to be strong and can enjoy their time out π

Perhaps your friend could start with short outings and gradually increase the duration and distance as confidence builds. Since he'll be with his mate, it's important they stay together and support each other. This can provide emotional and physical security.
I wish him luck and am sending him a virtual big hug for courage as he takes these steps toward reclaiming his sense of security and freedom, which is a fundamental right. It's shocking that such situations still arise in the first place, and it underscores how much work we still have to do to ensure everyone can live without fear.

All went well, was hyper alert as expected but no trouble he had his mate with him :)

by the way my mate asked if I could share this video as it really resonated with him because of his experience. He says this is what it's been like for him. It's a French ad (subtitles) about the situation with antisemitism over there:

@wandering_chris, I'm so happy!! Is he feeling able to go out again soon? Thank you for sharing the video. It makes me so sad that people feel they should hide who they are. Sending my best wishes to you and your friend π

Thank you so much, I share your sentiments about people having to hide who they are. What i've seen through my friends experience though is that this has been security advice to keep individuals safe. However, seeing what my friend has gone through I believe it sends the wrong message and tells antisemites and every form of bigot they will win with intimidation, we can't have that believed.
