Extra room for study

Hi,

I'm new here. I am looking for some advice regarding extra bedroom rules. I have a son ages 19 with an EHCP. We live in a 3 bedroom house. I have another son of 17. My son studies online and uses the same room to sleep in, which is difficult with room size limitations. He would hugely benefit from a separate study room. Do we qualify for an extra room for this purpose?

Thank you!

If you're asking about an extra bedroom entitlement for housing benefit or housing element of UC then no, I'm afraid not, not for this reason.

Of course you can move house and have an extra room.

Thank you for your reply! When enquiring about extra study space, if needed, another room was covered under these conditions. If the person studies from home, they would need an extra room other than a bedroom. So if I moved to allow the extra room, would this apply? I appreciate any comments from people who have successfully done this.

    Thanks!

You will not be able to claim for an extra bedroom for a study. There are only 2 ways in which you can claim for an extra bedroom if claiming either Housing benefit or Housing element of Universal Credit…

1/ if you need regular overnight care and you're claiming either daily living PIP, DLA mid/high rate care or Attendance Allowance. (AA).

2/ If either of your children can't share a room and they are claiming any of the above benefits.

2/ Or you can't share a room with a partner due to health conditions and you're claiming either of the above benefits. Full details in this link.

You can move house for the extra room but any shortfall of rent means you'll need to pay that yourself.
