Historic medical records

I am trying to obtain my medical records from 30+ years ago - to clear my mind when I had a serious accident.
I have moved house in between - so different GP / Hospital.
Does NHS keep medical records forever or are they destroyed after x years ?
How do I start my search - and where ?
Is there a central storage place or are they held locally (to my old residence)?
I have access to my GP records and they stop in 1995 (my accident was 1990)
I found this site
Which seems to imply that MR are kept for 100 years- but I am unsure …..
What is the primary purpose of medical records - for the patient to be able to get updates of their health needs or for the health professionals use ?
Have any of you - successfully obtained historic records ?
