It's International Crochet Day!
I picked up crocheting a couple of years ago after getting jealous of all my mother-in-laws wonderful creations and decided I wanted to give it a go!
What is Crochet?
It involves using one hook and wool to create loops that eventually end up as a cardigan, flower, octopus, hat, you name it! The name means 'small hook' which is very apt. It's typically faster than knitting but it uses more wool. It's a great hobby to pick up and it's cheap to start. There are tons of tutorials on YouTube to get you started and you'll be a whizz in no time!
The Wonderful Granny Blanket
Teeny Tiny Micro Crochet
Crochet hooks come in all different sizes and can go as small as 0.4mm! For micro crochet, you use sewing thread instead of wool. It allows you to create really small pieces like the ones shown below. I used to love doing micro crochet but I'm not sure I could do it now as it's so fiddly and my eyes aren't as good. Have you tried it before or do you own any micro crochet pieces?
Look how cute these are 😍
Everlasting Flowers
I love crocheting flowers and it's a great way to add colour to a room without worrying about watering! I made these a while ago and there's no way I can kill them 😂
Here are more extravagant flower bouquets that I found online. How gorgeous are they?
Fun Facts
- Lace crochet was picked up by many people during the Irish Potato Famine as it was their only source of income.
- The first printed crochet patterns are from 1824.
- Crocheting can help with stress, anxiety, and depression. It definitely helps me when I'm feeling low.
- The largest crocheted blanket is around 120,000 square feet. You could have a huge sleepover with that!
- The world's longest crochet chain was just under 81 miles long. My hands are tired just thinking about it.
Yarnbombing
We'd love to see what you've created, even if it isn't crochet! It could be knitting, cross stitch, felting, whatever you like 😊

Rachel, I much prefer your cutsie flowers 🏵️ did you make those gorgeous animals??
I learned to crochet then knit but like so much else, stopped.
🤔 I know I couldn't follow a pattern now and early astigmatism probably made it difficult for me then so I've just forgiven myself for stopping!
I've seen some lovely decorated letter boxes around and about - they speak love, they always make me smile 😍

Your flowers are gorgeous @Rachel_Scope, and that's neat work on the blanket @Bluebell21!
I wish I could crochet but I don't think I'd be any good at it! I've seen some yarnbombing about before though, it always brightens my day. This was a great one I saw a while back, I think some of it is knitted but to my untrained eye it looks like there's some crochet too?

Yes, we have those letter box toppers too, lots in all the surrounding villages by me, they do them for each season I'll have to take a pic next time I pop up.

One of the best things about the area I live in, is one lady does the letter box toppers each month, it's always a lovely treat to see what's new. This month, it's reptiles! I'll try and get a pic later. 😊
