migrated to UC but received a random esa payment

hi

I’ve currently migrated to UC from income related ESA support group and I am due to receive my actual first UC payment at the end of this month, however this weds just gone (18th) I received an esa payment (which would have been my date to receive my esa) for £193. It’s not the amount I would have received had I not migrated but I’m confused as to why I even received it.

is anyone able to advise me on this?

Thanks In advance

Once you claim UC ESA ends, apart from another 2 weeks worth, known as a run on payment.

Thank you for your reply. I’ve had that already. I had what I believed to be my last ESA payment on the 4th. I did my UC migration online on 22nd august, a day after My ESA that I received on 21 august

ESA is paid two weeks in arrears, so I'm thinking the payment on the 4th is what you were owed, then on Wednesday that was the run on?

hi all, would anyone be able to explain this to me please. I am so confused. I thought my esa ended 2 weeks after migrating to uc? But it says I still get it, and I’m only getting this amount. My rent is £104 a week and it says I need to pay it but it will leave me with virtually nothing. Thank you in advance

They haven’t included the LCWRA element in your statement. Put a message into your journal and tell them it’s not included.

That statement also includes a deduction for ESA which tells me that part of your ESA was contributions based and this should be paid separately at £138.20/week paid fortnightly. Have you received any letters at all regarding New style ESA?

thank you poppy I’ll do this now. I haven’t no, I wasn’t even aware I was also getting contribution based ESA.
when someone eventually replies to my post in my journal do you know or have any idea of when I would possibly receive the difference ? Thank you so much for your help

I did receive what i thought was a random esa payment last week of £193 (and it was paid on the day I would have got my esa had I not migrated.

Do I not get the transitional protection thing?

    This is unbelievably confusing.

Thank you for fr your help

For the missing LCWRA element it’s likely because ESA haven’t sent your details across. It happens sometimes. They will recalculate your statement and pay what is owed.

If you haven’t received any letter about New style ESA and you haven’t received any payments from them then you need to ring ESA.

You should also put a me into your journal and tell them you haven’t received any ESA payments and don’t understand why that deduction is on your statement.

LCWRA is £416.19/month. I don't know what that £193 was for because New style ESA is £138.20/week but I would have expected you to receive a letter telling you that your CB ESA would be transferring to New style.

If part of your ESA wasn't contributions based then the deduction for ESA in your UC is almost certainly an error.

What you need to do is ring ESA to ask if part of your ESA was contributions based when you were claiming it.

I don't know if you're entitled to Transitional Protection(TP) because I don't know the figures of the previous benefits you were receiving. However, if your ESA included the Severe disability Premium and you still live alone or treated as living alone then yes there would be some entitlement to TP. If there is entitlement then it's not unusual for them to calculate this after you receive your first payment.

Thank you so much for his Poppy. I’ve taken a photo of my last letter I received re:my ESA from 5 August 2024 before I migrated to UC.

That includes the SDP so there should definitely be some Transitional Protection. As I advised it’s not unusual for it not to be calculated in time for your first payment. When this happens it should be done within the next couple of weeks. It’s because the other departments that paid your previous benefits are often slow sending the figures across. Same often happens when claiming Tax Credits.

I can’t tell from that information if part of it was contributions based. You will need to ring them to ask.

You can also put a message onto your journal and tell them that the TP wasn’t included either.

Poppy I cannot thank you enough. Spoke to ESA and I do get CBESA alongside UC the figure I’m getting for ESA is because I’ve got some deductions until 23rd October and then goes to the rate you said. I rang UC and spoke to them and I’ve had a call back and it’s been amended. I’ll get what was missing on Monday. Thank you so very much for your help and advice

Ahh that's brilliant, I'm glad it's been sorted so quickly and I'm glad I was able to advise you correctly. It's quite normal for this to happen but understandably it worries everyone when it happens.
