Introducing myself: Emily
Hi, my name is Emily, I’m 21 from Birmingham UK. I’m a 3rd year media & comms student who works in social media, events & activism.
I often feel alone, different and othered due to the lack of disability representation in the world as well as at uni & work and am hoping that joining here will help me navigate being disabled in this world.

awww thank you. I didn’t use to use it either or understand it but it was something I learnt in class & something I’ve seen & felt from being treated differently in the workplace due a different identity despite disabled. Thank you for saying hello & It’s lovely to meet you 🥰

Hey @eadalton02, welcome to the Scope community 😊 It can be a difficult world, one that has been built without us in mind. That lack of consideration is what disables us the most. Accessibility and consideration has improved over the past few decades though. We can only hope this continues as there is still so much more that can be improved.
I understand that othering as well. I've even felt it from people who share one of my conditions, when I briefly worked for a major supermarket one summer I asked for a occupational health review upon being hired because of my Crohn's disease. I knew I would need some adjustments if it flared. One of the managers, who also had Crohn's disease, asked me why I would ever request it and how it would cost the company money. I was so confused as to why they'd admonish someone with the same condition as them just for suggesting adjustments might be needed.
Changing this mindset is slowly happening in my experience though, we just have to keep giving our voices and pushing for the change.

Hi and welcome to the community.

I don't personally agree that it is the nature of management. I agree that it's how many managers can be like, which is unfortunate.
And yes, good managers aren't just good managers for the benefit of the employees. It also benefits the organisation. A bad manager will not be good for their team, and often will also not be good for the organisation, something I hope companies learn about faster.
When employees are happy and listened to they are a lot more likely to stay in their job and so the company keeps their expertise, knowledge and more. And a good manager is vital to that.

@eadalton02 Hi Emily. 👋
I see how you feel and it really sucks how we're treated as if we don't exist so much of the time. ❤
We're all here for a chat when needed.
Also we share the same name lol ( in real life lol.)
