Central Heating

It's about 15 or 16 Celsius in my house. I'm wearing two thinnish jumpers and a thick cardigan but I'm cold. Ought I to put the central heating on or sit it out?

If you are cold or uncomfortable, then you should definitely put the heating on.

I'm the same, I'm dreading winter, but as kimmy87 says, don't be uncomfortable, put your heating on. I too feel the cold, as I can't move around as much, I've just ordered a heated throw blanket online to help, just make sure your warm, being cold might make you ill.

If I'm sitting in sitting room during day my temp is usually around 20. I feel the cold so I will put on an extra layer insulating layer on top, cover my knee area with a fleece and if needed with use one of the warm knee electric blanket. I would have have heating higher than 15/16 that is too cool
I live in an always cool Scotland, have fleeces, blankets always to hand for my warmth

Dont forget to check your iron levels ahead of cold seasons as well, it makes it a million times worse than it already is

Get in touch with Energy Saving companies, ask your energy company for advice. Due to my health problems, age etc I received a heated hot blanket from a company my energy company puts their customers in touch with. Passed one I bought earlier this year to a friend who says she has too much pride to ask !! I always think - if you don't ask you don't get.
If you are over retirement age - you may be eligible due to health conditions for Attendance Allowance. If you are going to apply get CAB etc to help fill the form with you - wrong wording can mean loss of this allowance claim. Folk doing the form assessments are NOT medically trained assessors so get help to fill form

My heating has been on most of this summer, been pretty cool up here, think it's been off about 2 weeks all year.

Hi @Bluebell21 I'll think I'll stick the heating on for an hour.

FYI My front room never goes below 20C, my gaming computer maintains the temperature at a lot less cost than a heater
and to quote Michael57, it is true and it is called climatizing, same as when you handle snow your hands get cold and then after some time handling it they will start to warm up, however, if you have poor blood circulation, nutrient deficiency and or low immune system, then don't risk it and put your heating on
I am not advising health I am just telling of my experiences
at the end of the day do what you feel is best for you
I do have a 500w compact ceramic heater as a backup just for the front room, Very efficient heater, it has normal filaments with ceramic plates in between and can heat my front room with no problem. It is 11ft wide 23ft long and 11ft high, an old Victorian building
I have lived on the moors, in a tent, I have lived in a caravan and I have been homeless for quite a considerable amount of time in my life
None of the above now ๐
all the best to you

I always wondered what the point of cardigans was and why older people seem to have tons of them. Now I know, our's is an 1870 house, I really feel the cold and even though we have a fairly economic heating system, it's like a fruitless task trying to heat the house. Drafts get in everywhere, I'm hypothyroid so don't regulate my heat well and have Raynaud's hands and feet look like a dead persons. I have sneakily got a new tank of gas and put calor heater on low in my cellar study room , it's toasty. ๐ but I can't stay down there all day โ๏ธ๐งโ๏ธ

I take my hat off to you, I too have worked on farms, not as long as you have, in all weathers, all times of day and night, the work never stops

I would highly recommend Green Doctors by Groundwork's's UK I used to be on the Youth Advisory Board for it I had a workshop about a year ago and I can't fault them they are amazing I would highly recommend them. They help with energy costs, keeping the home warm and how to save electricity.

ah i was a lucky man being able to do something i classed as a hobby rather than a job low wages very long hours but job satisfaction was more important for me calving a cow in the middle of winter stripped to the waist at 3am when you have to go milking at 4.30 am still brings a smile to my face ๐
