ESA Support Group not got normal amount
Hi
September I got £3,510 from a private pension. I phoned DWP they said because it not over £6,000 I will be okay to do so. The amount I should have got was £4,000 but Gov did emergency tax and I only got £3,510, so I applied for tax refund of about £390 I got that this week been waiting since September.
I have a limit where anything below about £12,000 it is not taxed. Now yesterday I got about £5,227 roughly into my bank. I told the person financial advisor I only wanted £4,000 as anything above would effect my benefits. Now last night my benefit ESA Support Group money with Enhanced Disability went in but it was a lower amount. I normally get £481.10 but I got £452.36.
I got my normal PIP Payment for physical and is it care. I am worried now as I have not heard from DWP and worry my next payment in two weeks may be less. So with the £4,000 and £5,227 that is above £6,000 but my bank balance has not gone over £6,000 with the way I have been paid and I took money out yesterday so not gone over allowed amount. I am in Support Group Income Related ESA I worry I will be pushed on to UC before natural migration where I would have kept my Premiums. Just to say also United Utilities were a couple of months ago getting in touch with Dwp about taking money from my benefits as I got behind, though I have been paying here and there. It’s just too much of a coincidence if that is the case for them to take it when I get the pension in my account; so I am worrying what is happening I am scared of phoning them.
Any ideas anyone please. Thank You

I don’t understand why I was taxed £390 which is what I claimed back as they should not have taxed me. Then day or so after the £5227 surely I should have got that at the time when I got my first pension private payout. I am 55

Are you saying you had a £4,000 payment and then another payment of £5,227? This gives a total of £9.227 capital. (savings) There's a £1/week deduction for every £250 or part thereof over £6,000. If you didn't have any capital before you withdrew that amount the the total deduction for your ESA per week will be £17/week.. £34/fortnight. The difference in what you received and what you usually receive is £28.74. Based on that I will guess they have deducted money due to your capital.
Do you still have the money you withdrew? Capital is counted whether it's in a bank account or not. Withdrawing the money and keeping it doesn't mean it's ignored.
Either way, you will need to ring ESA to ask as they are the only ones that can tell you what's happened.
PIP isn't affected because it's not means tested.

yes I only expected £4,000 as this was below £6,000 limit but it seems from my 14,000 pension they have left £3,000 with them and gave me bigger amount than I wanted. Just don’t get why they send bigger amount now. Does that mean that will be forever that deduction to my benefits? Also would this now trigger transfer to uc with protections?

I am using it to pay off debt

I thought they gave me £4000 so got say roughly £3600 and emergency tax of £390 which I did p55 online claim on gov. So that came through say this Monday but I did not expect the £5,227 which has me confused. I don’t think there is a number for gov.

I got £3,600 roughly in August they took £390 emergency tax then all the rest unexpectedly this week I was expecting £390 but not other amount. I specifically told financial advisor what I wanted he agreed and it seems he has not followed my plans for my pension

meant to say work this trigger transfer to uc with transitional protections?

meant “would” not “work”

obviously I am not going to have more than £6,000 forever as everything is going up so when will they stop deducting?

Also does this now effect my housing and council tax benefits?

I am going to have to contact pension provider and asked what happened. There is not much I can do now other than to see what happens.

It will not trigger a move to UC. If the first lump sum was paid in August and the 2nd one very recently, providing your capital didn't go above £6,000 at anytime then you should be ok.
As I advised, you'll need to ring ESA to ask why your payment was less than usual. I can only guess this was the reason why.
To be clear, paying off debt if you have capital of more than £6,000 could be treated as deprivation of capital if that debt wasn't immediately repayable. The rules for paying off debt are different for legacy benefits than they are for UC.

Hi Poppy123456
The debt was I needed to buy my items back out of cash generator. Also I have had a letter the deduction from my benefit was for United Utilities. I owe over roughly £1,000 just wondered if I should also continue to pay them as well, I suppose it will get my balance down. I don’t think that will be a problem as I have been paying £20 £50 here and there by card on UU website.
Thank you for your help truly appreciated
