Little support with rent with daughter on PIP
Hi All,
I would like some advice on my current situation as a I feel like the council are charging my family more than necessary.
I am a single mother of 5, my eldest has severe special needs and earns PIP allowance. I am her full time carer and I am paid to look after her for 35 hours.
When my son graduated from university and started working. The council ordered him to pay around £110 per week towards the rent, and my special needs daughter to pay £18.10 per week as she is over 25. My question is is the council right to only award £29.77 per week towards the whole rent?
Due to my son not mentioning to council he has started working, they have ordered him to pay £7000 for not paying approx a years worth of rent. He wasn’t aware he would he liable to pay so much as he doesn’t have a room and is sharing with his sibling.
Please can you help with this as the burden of this debt is now on me.
Many thanks

Non dependent deductions for housing benefit are a lot less generous than they are for housing element of Universal Credit.
As your daughter is over 25 then the deduction for her will be £19.30/week, if her weekly income is less than £176/week. (Not including her PIP)
For your son it will be depend on his earnings. This link will tell you what the deductions will be for him.
If you claim either PIP daily living, DLA mid/high rate care yourself there will be no deductions.
When your son started working it was your responsibility to report those changes to your Local Authority.
If you’re not claiming a disability benefit yourself then I’d advise you to use a benefits calculator to check entitlement to Universal Credit. For your daughter there will be no non dependent deductions. For your son it will be a standard £91.47/month. See link
There’s a benefits calculator here you can use: https://www.entitledto.co.uk/benefits-calculator/
