hi Im trying to claim universal credit I earn 1550 pounds a month my wife gets 700 maternity pay from government we have 1 child and pay 600 pounds a month on rent would we be entitled to any I don’t really under what the 55p taking off every 1 pound I make means our universal credit it says total entitlement before deducting is 1512 would I get anything or not?

Hi,
As you have a child and housing costs, you get a work allowance of £404 a month.
£1550 - £404 = £1146.
55% of £1146 = £630
So you would get a deduction of £630 from your UC entitlement for your earnings.
I believe maternity allowance from the gov't is deducted in full from UC so that would be the full £700.
So that would leave you with about £182 of UC after deductions.
